Breakfast For Two Unlocked Treasures Studio StorySong (Unlocked Treasures of the Heart Sample) – Kickstarter Project

Breakfast For Two

Breakfast For Two, a set table. Life and Love.

Breakfast For Two was composed in 2008 by MyDad for our Unlocked Treasures of the Heart Kickstarter Project (please check it out, consider Backing and spread the word!) and will be included in the book we hope to publish as 1 of 30 literary pieces from the vaults of Unlocked Treasures Studio, where 100 more songs just like this one reside.

This is a really touching and romantic story of love and life, the subject being, of course, MyMom. Enjoy. :)

BREAKFAST FOR TWO

Monumental fixtures…in our minds
Snap shots and moments
From days .. gone by
Staying clear-N-fresh
Through the seasons…of our time

While etched ..on our faces
Aging lines…leaving traces
Of our past
We thought our…summer days
Somehow …would last-N-last

But only God knows why
They..fly..by
So… fast

Ahh..
He wakes up in the morning
To a house…..where the kids no longer play
He heads for the bathroom
To grab a shower…an a shave

He looks into the mirror
While rubbing…shaving cream…on his face
The reflection staring back at him
Looks some how…oddly ……outta place
Seems..
His handsome dark moustache……and cool goatee
Have turned to..salt -N – pepper Gray

Out in the kitchen…she’s busy Fixin
Some breakfast….and fresh Cof..fee
He smells..biscuits an bacon
As the rising Steam from the faucet…makes it hard to see

Mmm..suddenly
He grips his shaving razor…like a…carpenters hammer
Catches his breath…and starts to stammer
Then just…Stands there.. like a Statue
With a strange look …on His face
Yeah…he’s caught Away…. to that other Place

Where old Memories hang like Picture’s
Monumental fixtures
Down the hallway’s…of His mind

Ohhhh..So fresh -N- clear…He see’s

Long shiny blonde hair….hanging down to her hips
Shapely tanned leg’s….and ruby red lip’s
Lovely green -blue eye’s – N – a smile so sweet
She’s looking fine….from her head to her feet
In her little bikini….out in the sun
Get-en a tan……and a having some fun
An when she strike’s that pose….he’s blown away
By her youth full….natural beauty

Ahhh..seems like…only yesterday

She was the kinda girl….he’d been dreaming of..all his life
And he knows….. it must have been..the Lord’s a doing
Cause that young woman….became his wife

Well
A familiar voice…..brings him back..from his Memory
She’s saying…honey ! the Coffee’s..rea….dy
An breakfast….will be..in a few
So he finishes up…in the bathroom
Puts on a pair…of his favorite…worn down shoes

Then He makes his way…to the kitchen
Where…an older…blonde
Is a fixin

Breakfast….for two

Ahhh…Shaving cream -N- Memories
Reflections….from another time
Kid’s grow up and seasons change
But old Memories..they stay the same
Hanging like Picture’s….Monumental fixtures
Down the hallway’s…of our…mind’s

Mmm….yeah
Out in the kitchen
His lovely wife….. is fixin

Breakfast…for …two

(softly fading voices)
Ummm….coffees good babe
Thank you …….honey
Your welcome… sweetie

Ahh… thank God….for old memories
But a man couldn’t ask…for better company
Than my older blonde…ta share with me

Breakfast………..for……two

Mr. Winston Unlocked Treasures Studio StorySong (Unlocked Treasures of the Heart Sample) – Kickstarter Project

Mr. Winston the Puppy

Mr. Winston may look nice and innocent, but DO NOT BE FOOLED!

Mr. Winston is a new song written by MyDad for our Unlocked Treasures of the Heart Kickstarter Project (please check it out, consider Backing and spread the word!) and will be included in the book we hope to publish as 1 of 30 literary pieces from the vaults of Unlocked Treasures Studio, where 100 more songs just like this one reside.

This song is really a comedic piece, and is quite hilarious if I must say so myself. The pictures we took of our new pup (who inspired this song), also fit SOOO perfectly with the words my dad wrote. Dad had a lot of fun with this piece, and I’m sure you will too. :)

MR. WINSTON

Hey ! Mister Winston…wha’d you do with my shoe ?

Now…Listen Winston…I know ya like ta …Chew
It seems ta satisfy your jitters…from being such a rube

So I’m asking you kindly
Hey! Mister Winston…wha’d you do with my shoe?

Running round the house…like a crazy mouse
With all that curly hair…tail wagging every where
Chewings on your mind…anything you find… will do
Tell me.. Winston…who lit your little puppy fuse…

I know Buddy and Bella…would never act like you
Oh…There gonna put ya… in the Winstonion news
Right on the front cover…with my missing shoe

No no…don’t do this…uh uh… don’t do that
Better watch out…for Lilly.. the bossy cat
Jumping-n- rolling…sliding-n- flowing…all over the room
Chubby little Winston…ya got my heart in a swoon
Dragging dirty clothes…prancing to your own tune
Using my boxer shorts …for a broom

Ya know..Mr. Winston
Not Sammy not Chelsea…not Sheba not Kelly
Heck! Not even Beau would ever…do like you do

Hey!
Come Read all about it…in the puppy dog News
How a chubby little cubby…chews up our shoes

Mr. Winston the Pup, the Embodiment Of Evil

Mr. Winston the Puppy… The Embodiment of Evil Manifest.

But…
Hes curly…hes fuzzy…hes happy.. hes tubby

And I think..He might be smarter… than the average dude
Cause when hes sleeping…we say ahhhh..so lovely
Forgetting crazy puppy antics…he puts us through

Mom bathes him in the kitchen sink
Even happy little puppies… can kinda stink
All wet..acting like a fradey cat
Mom dries em with a fluffy towel
And wraps his head..in a hoodie like hat

Big sad eyes …and a mopey face
Mr. Winston…cocks his head and contemplates
Another round…of the Winston race
Where he trots around…like a snorting bull
In the world where puppies…think they rule

Well.. the latest report… on the Winstonion News
Says…worn out man…can’t find his shoe

Now Winston..I know ya like ta…Chew
It seems ta satisfy your jitters…from being such a rube
And since all them other dogs…once were puppies… just like you
I’m gonna ask ya kindly…and use the Golden Rule
Hey!
Mister Winston !
Wha’d you do with my shoe !???

Tamarisk Breezes Unlocked Treasures Studio StorySong (Unlocked Treasures of the Heart Sample) – Kickstarter Project

Tamarisk Trees In the Canyon of Phoenix, Arizona. Copyright not my own.

Thanks to the photographer for this amazing picture of Tamarisk Trees in the canyons of Arizona.

Tamarisk Breezes is a new song written by MyDad for our Unlocked Treasures of the Heart Kickstarter Project (please check it out, consider Backing and spread the word!) and will be included in the book we hope to publish as 1 of 30 literary pieces from the vaults of Unlocked Treasures Studio, where 100 more songs just like this one reside.

Tamarisk Breezes was composed by my dad this April and is thus one of the newer pieces that he has written. He was inspired to write it by the Tamarisk Trees and Cottonwoods that used to line the canals of Phoenix, Arizona during the early years as he was growing up in the 60s. It is a beautiful, grand, majestic piece that will surely pique your interest and shows off my dad’s literary skill, written in his unique style. Enjoy! :)

– Remember to check out the Unlocked Treasures Studio Kickstarter Project for SIX samples of StorySongs that will be included in the upcoming book! Please donate anything you can to the cause, from $1 to $100, we can greatly use your help with 20 days to go before our deadline! –

TAMARISK BREEZES

Through the mist…of yester years
Flash traces of faded Heroes… golden laurels
Reflected in Times… windswept mirror
Echoing Concertos…of Triumphs and sorrows

The wind blows… symphonic rhapsodies
It’s enchanting breezes sing along
Through old Cottonwood and Tamarisk Trees
Serenaded by voices…of fore-fathers gone
Long..long before…this troubadour’s song

On majestic mountain…carved in stone
Faces staring…from our past
Heroic patriots… stand alone
Where ancient warriors shadows cast
And the winds of time…caressed their songs
Where now… tourists stand and gaze in awe

The same wind… that’s blown across the earth
Carried voices… from Parthenon and Acropolis
Cooled the brows of builders… of pyramids
And lifted cries of slaves…whose lives were lived
For kings and pharaohs… dreams and whims
That have long ..long..gone..to dust

Armies massed..in endless wars
Countless killed ..to settle scores
Empires rise and empires fall
To trumpet sound..to clarion call

Voices of humanity
Voices throughout history
Courageous moral..or evil disdain
Mankind’s fruitless oral refrains
Swept up.. and carried away like leaves
Through the annals..of jaded centuries
Faded vapors.. on ageless breeze

Leaving monuments..made by man
Ancient Masterpieces..colossuems
Marble statues..great stacked blocks of stone
Silently standing..hollow..alone
Empires that marveled..at their own display
All are gone..swept away
By the winds of time
Massive granite… crumbling clay

Oh wind that blew on Adam’s cheek
And tousled the locks of fair Eve’s hair
You heard the first words..that man did speak
And when he walked with God..you were there
Gently blowing… on God and man
The fragrance of creation
Oceans and land

Blowing down.. through the ages
Gusting through.. mankind’s deeds
Lifting voices..turning pages
Answering only to God
Creator of humanity

Man..The great taker..the user
The great builder..the abuser
Patting himself on his own back
Folding his arms ..puffing his chest
Arrogant..he knows not.. what he lacks
Full of pride..full of self
Saying..behold..I am better than the rest

The old story..does not change
But it doesn’t have to be the same

Oh wind ..that blew on Adam’s cheek
Caressing words..that men speak
Fluttering through.. every generation
On their journey.. to their destination

Ashes to ashes..dust to dust
Everything passes..everything must
But Gods’ Love.. is for Eternity
His Savior lives..to set humans free
Let His Love.. blow in your heart
Come into the Light.. out of the dark

Through the mist..of yester years
Flash traces of Gods golden Chorales
Reflecting Love.. in Time’s windswept mirror
Ah..but Eternal folly..history’s bell tolls clear
Ringing gilded Concertos…of triumphs and sorrows

The wind blows.. melodic symphonies
Its enchanting breezes sing along
Through old Cottonwood and Tamarisk Trees
Serenaded by voices.. of fore-fathers gone
Long…long before..this troubadour’s song

Support Unlocked Treasures of the Heart, Me and MyDad’s Kickstater Project!

Unlocked Treasures of the Heart Jamie Logo

This Unlocked Treasures of the Heart logo was drawn by our friend Jamie. R.I.P.

Hello boys and girls,

Please take a hard look at me and my dad’s Kickstarter Project, called “Unlocked Treasures of the Heart“. This is a project that has been 40 years in the making as it seeks to turn my dad’s life’s work of Christian songs, ballads, poems, StorySongs and writings into a published literary work. To get to that book form, we need your help.

We still have a whopping 20 days left for our Kickstarter Campaign, but we need your support! Please take a look at the project and read the sample songs we have provided, these are full pieces or partials, which give you a strong example of what will be included in the final book. If you like what you see, please Like the Unlocked Treasures of the Heart Project Page, and consider Backing it with whatever you can afford, even if it is only $1! We’d greatly, greatly appreciate it!

Of course, the most important thing you can do is tell your friends or people you think might be interested! Also tweet it to help us spread the word to the wide world, and post it on your Facebook wall, encouraging others to check it out!

Farewell and Godspeed!

Here is an unused video that was originally going to be our pitch for the Unlocked Treasures Kickstarter Project! It’ll give you a lot more insight into what to expect from the project, as told by MyDad himself.

Unlocked Treasures of the Heart, My Dad’s Kickstarter Project, HAS LAUNCHED! NOW LIVE! Please Donate For Cool Rewards! :)

Unlocked Treasures Studio Heart in Chains Logo

….. This logo of the Treasures of the Heart bursting forth from a chained heart was composed by my dad back in the late 1980s. This is a sketch of his logo for the studio, actually drawn by my dad. Soon to be fully realized and professionally done!

Hello everyone! The day HAS COME!

My dad’s Kickstarter Project, Unlocked Treasures of the Heart, IS OFFICIALLY LIVE! Please check the project out and donate to it if you feel so inclined! Even if its only a dollar, every little bit counts! And you will earn yourself some very cool rewards for Backing this project!

This personal dream of my dad’s means a lot to us, so please spread the word about Unlocked Treasures of the Heart and help us obtain our funding goal!

Unlocked Treasures is my dad’s dream to publish a full color, extraordinary-quality paperback AND hardcover book full of at least 30 of my dad’s favorite songs, ballads, poems, StorySongs, drawings, art pieces and writings that he has composed since his teenage years. There are over 100 songs in total, and thus we plan to publish at least three volumes of books. This project will literally help us KICKSTART my dad’s dream of forming a REAL studio and getting his writings and other creative projects turned into reality. With the funds from this project, we will be able to hook up with a publisher and actually have my dad’s songs REALIZED and officially copyrighted and published in physical & digital book-form. It has always been my dad’s life dream to have this accomplished before he turned 60… Well 60 is close. REAL CLOSE.

Below are some samples of my dad’s writings that you can read on his Kickstarter, these are StorySongs and ballads that will be included in the actual book. I will continue to do my part to spread the word, update the Kickstarter page every day, and will be posting even more samples here on WatchUsPlayGames.com for you guys to check out and for others to enjoy. In the hopes that you will see the immense value that these striking creative works emit and will join with us to help us reach our funding goal, whilst turning my dad’s kitchen table into an actual studio that publishes my dad’s life works!

These creative pieces are sure to warm the heart of many, so I hope you will hop on board and tell your friends and family what we are trying to accomplish. If you are an artist or creative person yourself, you’ll understand the passion my dad has for his writings, and I hope you’ll see the value in getting them published. I am sure you will after you give the samples a read. ENJOY! :) P.S.: Almost all of these StorySongs are inspired by REAL people or events through my dad’s life. :)

Lilacs & Roses

…. Beautiful Lilac and Rose flowers… my mom is the one in the song going out to trim the roses… with our beloved dog Sammy. *tear*

— LILAC’S & ROSES — (Partial)

While clipping flowers
In the garden.
Out in her yard.
Her little dog..lounges in the sunlight
As she winds up a music box
And sets it on
Fresh cut..Lilacs and Roses

The music box begins to play
And the fragrance..of
Lilacs and Roses
Carries her away

Lilacs and Roses
Some Lavender too!
Jasmine and sweet Alyssum
And Violets blue

The fragrance from the garden
Takes her heart..To You

On a bed of Lilacs..and pedals from the Rose
The Lord laid Adam
In the garden of Old
From His side..a rib was taken
And Eve was formed
From the man..came woman
In the midst of that garden
God’s love was born

The scent of..Lilacs and Roses
Was on the Father’s breath
When He sent the world a Savior
And His Word..Became Flesh

Lilacs and Roses
Your fragrance from above
First breathed by the Father
Mankind’s creator
The author of Love

Growing around.. old..Rugged Olive Trees
In an ancient garden grove..called Gethsemane
Were..Lilacs and Roses
Offering their scent

As great..Sweat drops of blood
Dripped From Your brow..that day
The sweet aroma of Your surrender
Made it’s way to the Father
While Mankind ..Just..didn’t understand
The cost… You were willing to pay

Oh what a present
Our Savior..His Son
A gift from the Father to everyone

A Sacrifice so deep
A Love so complete
Blessed Aroma and flavor
Of His Anointing we savor
Like..Lilacs and Roses
His Love is fresh and new
Each day

— TWO NICKELS — (Partial)

Two nickles…in a tin altoid box…. Shaped like… a heart
Big dream’s…of writing a Song…an maybe… someday…becoming a Star

I could hear the T. V., out in the living room
Bill O-Reilly was talking…from his no- spin zone
Gran-pa an Gran-ma…living in…the back-wing
Were watching soap opera’s -N- college football….and just about..any old thing

Well… I was playing oldies… for background music…from some Inter-net page
Uhh !… my pant’s felt kinda tight… guess I’m a showing….some Age
I’m typing with one finger…… so the going…is kinda… slow
I think My Chevy Van need’s a fuel pump…. can’t seem… ta get it… to go
And we’d just planted the front yard… with winter grass… that I… get to mow !

Ohhh…
Gran-pa drive’s around….in a motorized…chair
He’s drive-un… the neighbor’s crazy… their pulling out their hair
The stray cat’s… homesteading…out in the driveway
Were making… big..big… Sad eye’s
The kitchen faucet…kept a dripping…messing .. with the beat
Of the song…I was a trying…to write

Ahhhhh…..
A little later… someone tapped me on the shoulder…and kinda broke …my… con..cen…tration
I turned down the oldies …. mini-mized the page…..and looked into the face.. of… deter..min…ation
The wife looked me in the eye… an asked
Honey…have ya … got any Cash ?……. and that’s when I spoke… these kinda … Sorta… Immortal-like word’s

I said
I’ve got… two nickles…in a tin Altoid box…Shaped like … a heart
Big Dream’s …. of writing a Song…. an maybe….someday… becoming a Star

O.. Come harken
And tremble in awe
As Heaven’s mighty Arch Angels…faint and fall
As He Rises up… from Glorious Throne
Magnificent..Omnipotent
Transfigured flesh and bone
Galaxy’s swirl…in His Eyes of fire
Holding the fullness…of His Father’s desire

From His mouth
Cosmic Lightning.. flashes
Galactic Thunder claps Roar
As His Voice …trods God’s wine press
Heaven’s… fierce burning Sword
Dividing asunder…Spirit and Soul
Splitting Time and history
Shaking…Revelations…bells.. to toll

Then He gazes… At the future
Held high…in His right hand
Sealed.. in His Word.. from millennias past
Waiting…waiting…His commands

O..Triumphant Holder… of mortalities Keys
Salvation’s…bloody.. battle scarred King
O.. Human…resurrected..incarnate..Glorious being
Word made flesh
Loose your Sword…let it Sing

An when she strike’s that pose….he’s blown away
By her youth full….natural beauty

Ahhh..seems like…only yesterday

She was the kinda girl….he’d been dreaming of..all his life

Life Blog #1 – OW…. HURT (Wrist Pains)

Wrist Pains

“Ow… hurt.” “John I’m not gonna walk with you if you keep walking like that.” – Shanghai Noon

Hey guys, so I thought I’d do something unusual and update you a bit about what’s going on with me.

I didn’t post many new articles yesterday because I woke up with bad wrist pains. Enough that I felt I should go all day without doing any typing… But since this is ME we are talking about, I failed and did do SOME typing. But not nearly as much as usual when I’m writing lots of articles. So… I may be taking it easy for the next few days. And hopefully that’ll help my wrists.

Shanghai Noon trailer… one of the funniest movies of all time and my top five favorite movie ever!

I may still write a few more articles here and there.

Another project I am working on is a Kickstarter Project for my dad. We are knee deep in the process and our Kickstarter Project is nearly finished and will go live soon. All we gotta do is record a new video to replace the one we had recorded previously. I’ll be posting information about that as soon as it launches. Essentially it will be the true kickstart we need to get all of my dad’s over 100 writings, songs, poems, etc. copyrighted, registered and published in book form. Although we are starting out with only 30 for “Volume 1″. It’s some great stuff.

More soon. :)

God bless and I hope everyone had a fantastic Mother’s Day and did something great for the one who birthed you!

ListenToMePlayGames: Resident Evil Remake – Episode 1 Podcast (Guest: MyDad)

Resident Evil Remake Wallpaper (Jill)

Jill Valentine Wallpaper for Resident Evil Remake on GameCube.

Welcome to Episode 1 of “Listen To Me Play Games, With My Dad” as we dive into Resident Evil Remake for the Nintendo GameCube. One of my favorite games of all time.

Hear the first episode of ListenToMePlay Resident Evil Remake (With MyDad) – Part 1

(click the link above to listen to the first episode! Right-click “save target as” or something similar to save the episode to your computer!)

ListenToMePlayGames will be a new feature where I will record audio of me playing through a game, along with commentary from me and whoever else is joining in. In this instance it is my dad, someone who has never played a game in his life and doesn’t know a single thing about videogames. I hope that this will become a neat way to experience gaming, and turn out much like a radio show. If you’ve played the game before, you will be able to picture what is going on onscreen even though you can’t see it, and I think it will be a very unique experience!

With dad joining in, I think this will be an interesting feature and an interesting experiment to see what the average parent of a 20-something thinks about actually watching someone play a videogame from start to finish (my dad turns 60 next month). I chose Resident Evil Remake because, outside of it being an excellent game, it’s also fun to watch and is a game that I’ve always wanted my dad to see. I think it’s an excellent example of a cinematic experience because of the awesome cinematography and outstanding mood, ambiance and sense of dread that pervades the game’s wonderfully designed environments.

This debut episode was meant to be a trial or practice run, so we just start chatting right off the bat as I load the Wii up, before I even pop Resident Evil Remake in. Because it was meant to be a practice run, I think the chatting between me and my dad is much more natural, and we just start immediately talking about videogames, about what dad remembers from our childhood, about what certain things he sees onscreen mean, and he constantly peppers me with questions. Which is just how I wanted it. I also do a TON of explaining, naturally. I think most gamers will find it a fascinating time.

Due to the trial nature, there’s no intro really, we just kinda start talking and go from there. Before I put Resident Evil: Remake in, I start off with Zelda: Twilight Princess which I was using to test the mic. And that morphs into a pretty interesting conversation in and of itself. Dad gets a little tired by the end of my Resident Evil playing, but I think this first episode turned out pretty great overall. Enjoy.

Be sure to check out my father’s articles he has written for the site as well. See the overview on MyDad: Life Reflections & Opinion.

MyDad: The Glass Oval Cuff-Link… Trinkets, Memories and Pawnee Bill (Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show)

The Glass Oval Cuff-link & Trinkets

…… Here is an actual photo of the cuff-link Grandma gave me plus other trinkets and keepsakes in my lacquered box.

Back in about 1973 I used to go over to this little trailer park off of 27th Ave. and Osborn in Phx, AZ. There was a medium-sized trailer parked in there on one of the little trailer park streets. I was in my early 20s then and I’d go and visit my Grandmother Smith… a lot of the times we would go up to a grocery store she liked called “Food-a-rama” on the corner of Bethany Home Rd. and 27th Ave about a mile and a half down the road from her trailer.

Actually my mom and dad used to visit her and take her places… and they’d asked if I could help out one time. So I did. And I enjoyed it… so I just started dropping by to see how she was. And we ended up going grocery shopping. Her pharmacy was in that store also. Grandma was about 75 or 76 at this time, if my figuring is right. She had a pet dog, a wiener or Dashhound type named Doxie or Dutchess…

Anyway she was very close to her little dog and used to have conversations with her…. right in front of you. One time after we’d gotten back from shopping we were sitting at her kitchen table just talking and she picked up a pair of cuff-links out of the top part of a salt and pepper holder, one that sat in the middle of her table. The salt and pepper shaker stand had a little bowl on top and she kept jewelry and stuff in it. Taking the cuff-link out of the bowl, she said “These were your grand fathers… would you like to have them?” I said, “Yes. I’d love to have them.” She gave me another pair of cuff-links and a tie clasp also… but it was the first pair that I liked the best.

1955 Trailer

This trailer reminds me of my Grandma’s….

I remembered them being in that little bowl over the years… and they just looked like something my grandpa Smith would like. They were made of silver with a glass oval on top. Inside the oval was a beautiful desert sunset scene with a large Saguaro Cactus in the foreground. The sky was turquoise blue and the desert and mountain were a lovely orange-ish color. I took them home and put them in a small box in my top dresser drawer… over the years I would look at them and reminisce…

Grandma was moved to Tuscon, AZ with her oldest son and then to a rest home where she passed away in 1985. I think she was about 88 when she died… I believe she was born in 1897. Her little trailer house was sold when she moved to Tuscon and I never saw her again until her funeral. She was laid to rest next to Grandpa Smith in the old cemetery on Van Buren and Black Canyon Hwy in Phoenix AZ… over the years of moving to different houses and changing dresser drawers and the events of life… I lost one of the oval cuff-links but I still posses one of the two…

Memory Lawn Cemetery Phoenix, AZ

The old cemetery where Grandpa and Grandma are buried.

I have it attached to the chain of a pocket watch my children gave me for Christmas many years back (I think their mother really bought it and put their names on the present). I keep it in a Lacquered wooden box the watch came in along with some other cherished Trinkets… I’m so thankful that Grandma gave them to me back then.

We were talking about grandpa that day… sitting at her little table. I was telling her how I remembered Grandpa sitting in the same chair I was in and bouncing us boys around on his strong knees… and all the stories he entertained us with. Right there where we were sitting… I guess something touched her heart and she figured I might want something that belonged to him. Little did she know how her kind little gesture would effect me over my years……

You see, I don’t think I’ve ever really told anyone… well maybe the kids have heard me talk about it… but my grandpa smith was a wonderful heroic figure in my life. He was my connection to a time and era in history that had disappeared and the only way to touch it was in books, magazines and such. My grandpa was a strong stocky fellow with big strong hands… later in my construction days we’d call a guy like him a “tree trunk” meaning he was one solid dude. I remember seeing the look on my mother’s face whenever she was around him. Kind of an in-awe, dreamy-like look… I just knew she really loved him and it was special. As a little boy I picked up on this and as I got a little older and would talk and be around him.

Well I felt the same way when I was young. I remember asking my mom what nationality or ancestory was grandpa Smith… she would reply Scandinavian… the next time it would be… English… and sometimes Irish… I guess that was close enough for them. Anyway, I know his family were farmers and had homesteaded in the Iowa Territory back in the 1800s.

My grandmother and him both grew up on farms in the same area and he used to pick her up in a horse and buggy when they were dating… My first recollections of him were in the same trailer that my grandma gave me the cuff-links… only it sat in a different location, somewhere around 16th or 17th Ave. and south of Bethany Home Rd. just on the other side of Montebello I think.

One of my moms older sisters Aunt Juanita and uncle Byron had land there… you turned down a gravel driveway on the side of their property under a long row of mature shade trees past their house, a very large back yard and patio area… and sitting under a shade tree with smaller Plum and Apricot Trees sat grandma & grandpa’s trailer. Behind the trailer was another 4 or 5 acres of land with some very old and enormous Cottonwood Trees. At the back-end irrigation ditches ran across the back of the property with barbed wire fencing… I’m sure this was all farm land at one time… before my time.

In my youth growing up this is where we would go to visit grandma & grandpa Smith… also many great family gatherings took place there. Bar-b-ques, picnics, pot-luck gatherings where each family brought a dish or several for the meal. There were Volleyball games, Football, Bad-Mitten… all played in this beautiful shady green area in front of grandma’s trailer… and in this setting in that trailer is where I would sit mesmerized by my grandpa Clyde Smith’s stories from his childhood…

Ya see my great interest in history all started and was fueled by him… they used to babysit us now and then for an afternoon or evening. It was on one of these times that a milestone in my life was erected. Being the curious little guy I was, I asked grandpa if he ever saw any wild Indians or gunslingers.

Buffalo Bill Painting of Indian Scouting

Here is a famous painting of Buffalo Bill scouting for Indians.

He just looked at me for a moment, then rubbing his chin he said “… well… I saw Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show when I was a boy… and I met Pawnee Bill…

The famous Mountain Man and Indian fighter…” He said he also saw Frank James… Jessie James’ older brother… in an open train car with manacles and chains and armed deputies guarding him as the train passed through their farmtown.

Pawnee Bill & Buffal Bill Actual Photo

Here is a real-life photo of Pawnee Bill (on the left) and the wildly famous Buffalo Bill Cody (right).

I remember telling this story to my neighborhood chums… and them saying their dad’s never heard of no Pawnee Bill… Well years & years later in my private love of history pursuit, I came across a beautifully published book by the decedents of Col. William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill Cody) in our local public library… This book was full of excellent pictures… and wouldn’t ya know it… there in front of me I held in my hands full blown pictures of Pawnee Bill with Wild Bill Hickock, Chief-Sitting Bull and a bunch of other famous old frontier guys…

Here’s an actual video of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, first filmed by Thomas Edison! As the show was arriving to town.

There was actually a whole article on Pawnee Bill… as I sat there and looked and read that day, I was transported back to that trailer house sitting at my grandpa’s knee while he told of a young farm boy excitedly going to the outskirts of town to see Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show & Extravaganza… with wagon trains, Indian attacks re-enacted (with REAL Indians).

Some of whom fought at the Battle of Little Big Horn of Custer-fame… there were Mountain Men and World Champion Rifle Shots like Annie Oakley; there was Cowboys and Cavalry Charges… all in an arena shipped across America by rail! (Here is a fascinating website that goes into tons of detail and tells the whole history, with pictures, of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show!)

Actual Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show Ad

Here’s an amazing, actual banner ad from Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show from the 1880s!

In the future, Circuses & Rodeos would copy this great American Innovator named “Buffalo Bill”. When grandpa would talk of those old memories of his… they became mine too! Etched there for me to visit and ponder through my years. It’s always fascinated me that I knew and talked to someone who actually saw, literally talked to and met some of those heroes of the American west…

To me, my grandpa was a hero. As you have probably have surmised, Grandpa ended up marrying that young beauty he would pick up from her Daddy’s farm in a horse and buggy and he and Hazel Davis would create 8 children together. My mom, being the 5th girl in front of three brothers. During the Great Depression (starting with the crash of the stock market in 1929) and the ensuing Great Dust Bowl of the Midwest Farm Lands, well my grandma was suffering from the effects of tuberculosis.

Back then one of the cures was to get to a dry warm climate… well grandpa must have been feeling that frontier spirit of his forefathers, cause he built a travel trailer for grandma to lay in. He gathered up his 5 girls and with a car I’m sure was from the 1920s… with grandma safe with one of the older girls in the trailer (which by the way he built himself, he was a talented Carpenter and Cabinet Maker), he set off for a new life!

1922 Trailer

This is a trailer that is somewhat similar to what Grandpa Smith built to head out West to Phx, AZ.

Working his way across the country doing any odd job he could find on the road to the “Sunshine State” of Arizona… They settled on a small farm just across the Salt River off Central Ave. and Roser Rd. in Phoenix AZ. Over the years they had milk cows… chickens… and Orchards of Pears, Peaches, Apricots, Plums and Pecan Trees. Grandpa built a lovely Ranch House on the property with a red Spanish tile roof, flagstone walkways and patios, large fireplaces of fine stonework. I’ve seen pictures of this house and it really did look lovely…

This is the farm that my mother and her brothers used to ride their horses down to the river from. It is also where my dad used to pick my mom up for dates back in the 1940s… my mother was just a toddler when they set out on their journey. She grew up in this Farm House her Daddy built…

Well.. like I said earlier, the first time I remember grandma & grandpa Smith was in the Trailer House on Aunt Juanita’s and uncle Byron’s land… there was a fire and the Ranch House was destroyed… I’m not positive but I think it happened during the 4 years mom & dad were in California… where I and 2 of my younger brothers were born.

My dad worked for Sears Department store back then and was sent to open a sporting goods section… when they got back to Phoenix Grandpa Smith took mom & dad down to the bank and introduced them to the manager. I’m not sure if Grandpa co-signed for them or not.

My Dad had saved up a little profit sharing for a down payment and we moved into a new house out in the sticks amongst the Farmer Fields… it was in this house that I remember Grandpa Smith Re-modeling our dining room & kitchen. This was in 1962 or ’63. I remember because I came home from school early because President Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas, Texas and my teacher was so effected and disturbed by this that our class was sent home…

JFK Kennedy Dead

This is an actual newspaper of the day President Kennedy was assassinated.

I walked in the back door and there was my Grandpa Smith in his overalls with a pencil behind his ear nailing some wood on the ceiling where he had torn out a wall to expand the living & dinning areas. He looked at me from his scaffolding and said “Hey youngster! What are you doing home so early?”. I said, “Grandpa someone shot the President today in Texas! …and killed him…”

I went and turned on the T.V. it was on every station (all 3 of them). Grandpa never stopped working… he just got a sad look on his face and kinda wagging his head now and then he’d say, “Landsakes… what’s this world coming too….”

Seconds Before Kennedy's Death

Here’s a color photo taken seconds before President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

When I was in the 7th or 8th grade… I think it was 1964 or 65 anyway… it was October, Grandpa went in to the hospital for some tests on his esophagus and some upper respiratory problems. He was supposed to be in and out in a few hours. However something went wrong and he died that day in the hospital. I remember there wasn’t any dinner and mom & dad weren’t there… a neighbor lady was watching us. The folks pulled up, my Dad went around and got Mom out of the front seat. All us kids and a few neighbors were around the car… my Mom’s face was all red… she’d been crying.

Us kids still didn’t know anything… finally Mom just said, “Grandpa’s gone… he passed away.” We all burst into tears… I couldn’t believe it…

The funeral was held downtown at one of the old funeral parlors. Seeing Grandpa in that casket was very dramatic for me… I remember some of my older cousins watching me and my younger brothers with a concerned look on their faces. My heart was torn… I couldn’t stop sobbing.

Grandpa was buried in the old cemetery off Van Buren… with all its beautiful old trees and lovely lawns. The gravestone… a large slab of marble with Grandpa’s info on one side and on the other was Grandma’s name and date of birth…

I remember our family picking Grandma up after church and taking her out to the cemetery… There’s a picture around here somewhere of all us kids and Mom standing in a line in front of the car right in front of Grandpa’s grave. Dad must of taken it. Grandma would go over to the grave and sit on the grass that had grown. I remember her crying… saying, “… Oh Clyde… Oh Clyde… I miss you so much.” My mom would squat down and put her arm around her and comfort her, saying, “Don’t cry momma… Daddy wouldn’t want you crying…”

I think we took her out there a few more times… the years passed… Aunt Juanita and uncle Byron ended up selling their property and moved up to the cool Pines of Northern Arizona. And grandma’s trailer home was moved to the little trailer park off 27th Ave. and Osborn.

And that’s where I would visit her and where she gave me Grandpa’s cuff-links. Grandma was laid to rest next to her beloved Clyde in the beautiful cemetery with the old shade trees. My Dad passed away last summer and the extra flowers left over after his service were taken by two of my younger brothers and myself along with some of our kids and laid on Clyde and Hazel’s grave.

I hadn’t been there in many, many, years… we took a picture of us, arms around each other’s shoulders in the same spot where… years before… as young boys we cried over losing grandpa….

We look like older men and grandpa’s ourselves in that picture…. Ive learned over the years that I didn’t loose grandpa… for he lives on in my memory and every time I take out my Christmas pocket watch and hold the cuff-link attached to the chain; And gaze into the glass oval and its unique landscape scene… I can hear my Grandpa talking about Pawnee Bill…. And how he would pick up beautiful Hazel Davis in a horse drawn buggy from her Daddy’s farm back in Iowa…..

My Grandpa wasn’t famous… he wasn’t rich (far from it), but he showed love and compassion to a young boy that has lasted a life time….

We never know in this life how important the person next to us might be to someone else… perhaps that nobody is somebody’s hero and maybe that little cheap trinket they keep is a “Priceless Treasure” to them…

Well my friends… I’ve rambled on long enough for one afternoon…..

So until next time…….. Godspeed and Fare-thee-well.

Here’s a little piece I wrote. I thought you guys might enjoy it.

Little Trinkets

Many of my little trinkets, bringing back memories….

Little Trinkets

Old rings and watches
Gold and silver chains
Knives for the pocket
Keep sakes and things

In a reddish lacquered ..felt lined box
Sit treasures …that unlock
Assorted…memories
From gifts…and little trinkets
Ordinary heirlooms..inexpensive pieces
That are…precious to me

Shinny harmonica… that I sometimes play
Choker necklace…of Hawaiian coral and clay
The Ring from the state fair…back in 83
Made of stuff…that turns… your finger green
Carved with a heart..saying.. S loves L
Little trinkets…ah..what stories..you tell

Swiss army pocket knife.. from an old friend
Green cleary..lucky marble shooter..I used as a kid
A black polished flat rubbing rock..I rub now and then
Gold plated money clip..shaped like an Indian head
Cuff links and tie clips..from gran-dads….long dead

A favorite Christmas pocket watch…with bauble and chain
Engraved with hunter and hound dogs….beautifully made
Attached to the end through a big round link
A rectangle lead medallion..
with a cross… and words that read
With God all things are possible…if you believe

An old silver cuff link..that my gran-ma gave me
Inset with an oval glass… tinted desert scene
Something worn by old gran-dad Smith
Just an ordinary trinket
Yet precious..you see

And there’s the gold.. wedding band
bought in a K-mart ..jewelry stand
For a wedding held.. in a living room
In our Levi ‘s…we made a lovely.. bride and groom
And now it lays together
In a lacquered box….with other treasures

But the biggest locket
Held deep in my heart
To big for my pockets
Not a piece of art

Just a simple promise
God made … to you and me
We will forever…see past loved ones
If in him…we believe

Yes
For His Love is bigger..than any treasure chest
More than heirloom trinkets…and memories
And all the earths riches..all of man kinds best
Are less than dust…to heavens… Eternity

I thank God for Jesus…every day
And because.. of what He did for me
My heart smiles..as I say

In a reddish lacquered…felt lined box
Sit treasures …that unlock
Assorted…memories
From gifts..and little trinkets
Ordinary heirlooms…inexpensive pieces
That are …precious …to me

We all have our little trinkets
You may keep yours… in a different place
Nothing wrong… with little trinkets
Just don’t make… the sad mistake
Of letting …your little trinkets
Be all your heart …can hold

So…make some room
For God and trinkets
You’ll be much happier….I know

Old Rings and watches
Gold and silver chains
Knives for the pocket
Keep sakes and things

MyDad: Bullfrogs, Bullies and The Troggs

Phoenix, Arizona 1950s Orchids and Farmer Fields (Camelback Mountain)

……This 1950s aerial photo shows how Phoenix, Arizona was brimming with Orange Groves, orchids & Farmer’s Fields. This is how I remember Phoenix.

Years and years ago there was a farmer’s field just right off our little neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if our new little suburb wasn’t carved right out of a corner of this good old Farmer’s Land. I remember a wide ditch that was dry and grassy… that ran crosswise, dividing our tract-homes neighborhood.

This large, wide, dry ditch stopped right where houses ended and the Farm Land began. Anyway, for a good half a mile or so, just inside the Farmer’s fence, was about a 30 to 40 yard wide swath of jungle land… Well, to us kids it seemed that way. I think it was probably what was left of a wind-break area with a large ditch-like canal running through it. It had little pools and ponds here and there. A much larger canal ran through the farmland for about a mile or so, caddycorner to the little windbreak, oasis area. There was quite a bit of brush with large trees – Cottonwood, Willows, Tamarisk, Palo Verdes, etc.

Well, the kind farmer would allow us kids to play in this area… As long as we didn’t bother anything over toward the barn and farm implements… Tractors, equipment and such. The Farmer would even come over and talk to us boys now and then; and we would say “Yes sir”, “No sir”, when talking to him. Always in a very polite manner as was custom for talking to an adult in those days.

I remember he was a leathery, rough-looking guy, but very mild mannered and soft-spoken to our little group of kids. Well, this little oasis was loaded with wildlife of all kinds… Frogs, toads, fish in the ditches, quail and dove, we’d see an owl now and then, horned toad too… But mostly I remember the bullfrogs. Big and round, they’d cover both hands when we’d hold them. Oh yeah, there were some ducks that hung around there also.

Christown Mall Phoenix, Arizona. Named after Farmer Chris Harri

This ol’ Farmer reminds me of the kind man who’d let us play on his farm…

We kids built a fort next to a little pond with some lumber we scavenged in the alleys running through the neighborhood, and by using some of my dad’s tools (secretly borrowed). The Farmer inspected our little fort and allowed us to keep it up. We used to take along canteens full of water, a big lunch and spend whole days playing there. Swimming, playing Army, climbing trees, etc.

Well turns out we weren’t the only group that wandered this desert jungle land… The O’Grady Bros. would show up now and then. Their leader, Ruffy O’Grady, wasn’t a very pleasant sort… seemed he was always looking for mischief or trouble.

One of my younger brothers had a great affinity towards the bullfrogs… I think he might have even named a few. I remember him loading them into his metal Tonka Truck toy and driving the bullfrogs around in the back of it, taking them on the roadways we’d carved by our little fort. Well, one day… We were at the pond area just playing and whanot… when here comes walking through the brambles… who else but Ruffy O’Grady, his brothers, and a few pals.

Bullfrog in the Grass

Bullfrogs like this were loved by me and my bros. Especially my younger brother.

They were carrying B.B. Guns and Pellet Guns… They said they were looking for a turtle that was their’s. We said we hadn’t seen any turtles… Ruffy noticed the Bullfrogs and started shooting his B.B. Gun into a big one that was sitting close-by. My little brother was outraged, and started to try and stop Ruffy. Then, laughing loudly, Ruffy called to his sidekicks… “Hey, let’s shoot some bullfrogs!”… And they commenced to shoot and kill each and every bullfrog. When I stood up to them, a pellet gun was pointed at me… along with the words, “You don’t own these Bullfrogs.” We stepped back and watched as Ruffy and his cohorts killed maybe 20 big Bullfrogs. After the massacre was over, they rambled off through the thicket, laughing and shouting taunts over their shoulders as they went. As you can imagine, my brother was devastated. They’d killed his good little buddies, his innocent buddies.

This episode has stayed in my mind all these years. Ruffy was a few years older than me and some of his sidekicks were his age. I think it was the next summer that someone broke into the Farmer’s Barn… that was always off-limits, and then set the barn on fire. The police never caught who did it. And the Farmer closed off his property with barbed wire and a “No Trespassing” sign. Our happy times in the oasis were over.

Ruffy Shooting Bullfrogs. Massacring them in Phoenix, Arizona 1960s

This feller is apparently shooting Bullfrogs. Maybe it’s Ruffy’s or his dad…. Hmm….

Over the years, I always suspected the O’Grady’s were the ones behind that fire that destroyed our beloved jungle oasis. Ruffy was an infamous firebug in our parts, and was well-known to have set fires. He even set cats on fire and was always performing hideous and devious deeds of that nature.

Well a few years later, I started lifting weights and working out with my older bro and a few friends in our backyard. We had a Speed Bag, A Heavy Bag, and a real good set of Iron Weights and even a Bench Press. We really got into it…

An old Transistor Radio

A Transistor Radio… takes you back to them good ol’ days.

I had a Transistor Radio I’d gotten for my 14th birthday from the Hobby Shop. You could hold it in one hand. It was covered in brown leather, with a strap or grip on it. I loved that radio… We’d tune in Kriz or Krux Radio Stations and listen to the Top 40 while working out. That’s when I first heard “Wild Thing” by a group called “The Troggs”. Whenever the DJ would say their name, “The Troggs”, I’d be reminded of Ruffy O’Grady and the Bullfrogs.

Well, I remember running into old Ruffy probably a few years later. We were both getting out of our car’s and walking into a local grocery store, and standing in the lobby area. One of my buddies yelled, “Hey! There’s Ruffy O’Grady!”. When I looked I beheld… A short, skinny, reddish-blonde-haired young man. He just stared at me with a funny, somewhat scared look on his face. I just smiled and said, “Hi there Ruffy. How are ya?” That’s just the type of guy I was, I’m not one to hold grudges. He mumbled something and slinked away.

That was the last time I saw the Great Ruffy O’Grady. Not sure what became of him, I wish him the best…. Although a number of years later, I heard that some vandals had burned down the old Gradeschool I went to… a historic building that was built in 1897 for the Farm Kids way North of Phoenix. It made me think of ol’ Ruffy for some reason. I always wondered if he wasn’t the one behind it…

Ya know, it’s funny about the Bully’s you know from your youth. They seem to stay kids… as we all grow and mature. Boy I sure liked that nice Farmer guy. I always hoped he didn’t think we had anything to do with his barn fire….

Well, that’s enough about the old days for now… God-Speed and Fare-thee-well.
