A Wild Star Fox Direct Appears – A New Star Fox Title Has Been Announced!

Nintendo dropped a Star Fox Direct, and it aired today to the surprise of fans everywhere. Here’s everything that was announced.

Like it was forecasted (it wasn’t), the Star Fox Direct kicked off with the legendary developer (and creator of Star Fox) Shigeru Miyamoto reintroducing the character as he appeared in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. After the brief reintroduction, Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the next title in the Star Fox series of games is called simply Star Fox. The title will be a reimagined version of the Nintendo 64 on-rails 3D shooter, Star Fox 64, and it will take place in the Lylat System, with iconic music tracks made famous by the series and Nintendo. The presentation can be seen below (fast-forward to time stamp 8:20).

The Star Fox Direct revealed that the team features full voice acting. Falco, Slippy, Peppy and Fox himself will banter with each other just like the original release, and hilarity will ensue. Fox McCloud leads the team, and this time around, the characters feature a more realistic-leaning animalistic appearance. Fox and Co. look more like the animals they’re based on, instead of how Fox appeared in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, where he sported a more cartoonish look with smoother edges.

The Star Fox Direct showed off the vehicle selection players can take out for a spin. The Arwing can shoot lasers, fire charged shots, brake, boost, and somersault through stages, and more expert pilots can up the difficulty between three stages. The Landmaster (featured in Star Fox 64), and the Blue-Marine (an underwater vehicle, also featured in Star Fox 64) will be other vehicles players can drive to destroy targets. These call back to the multi-vehicle approach of the series, and bring a variety of gameplay to Star Fox. Players will have to shoot through lush planets and biomes.

The Star Fox Direct showed improved visuals on the Nintendo Switch 2. Corneria has beautiful and lush greenery and bodies of water to gaze at, whereas the planet Solar looks more like a fiery wasteland. Star Fox will also reward players for checking off-beaten-path areas, and players can take a new path through the campaign (with new levels). Star Fox will also feature new cutscenes, revealing necessary context of the world’s characters and their relationships. Fox McCloud and his friends relationships and personalities will be explored further (not just through the banter in Arwings).

There is multiplayer in Star Fox, and players will have to engage in 4 vs. 4 dogfights as a member of Team Star Fox or Team Star Wolf. There are a multitude of multiplayer modes, and there’s even online play where friends can play against each other or random opponents for glory.

Nintendo has further implemented personal customization for online play. Players will be able to select their player avatar online (through the characters available in Star Fox), and players will be able to look and act just like their favourite Star Fox character with a compatible Nintendo Switch 2 microphone and camera setup. Players can even break out the official Nintendo 64 controller from Nintendo’s Online Store to play Star Fox as it was initially intended in 1997, and do some barrell rolls while they’re at it.
