MagicCon Las Vegas 2026: Unveiling The Hobbit, Reality Fracture, and Mood Swings

Wizards of the Coast has offered a glimpse into upcoming expansions for Magic: The Gathering at MagicCon Las Vegas 2026. Following up on announcements from MagicCon Atlanta 2025, the company revealed details about mid-year releases for 2026, including the highly anticipated The Hobbit and the original Universes Within set, Reality Fracture, slated for an October release.

Fans were treated to a preview of new card designs, special treatments, and the core concepts behind these upcoming sets. The Hobbit set promises to immerse players in Bilbo Baggins’s iconic journey, featuring familiar characters and pivotal moments from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, such as the “Riddles in the Dark” chapter and the introduction of The One Ring. The set will include various card frames, including new Box Toppers for full box purchases, and special treatments like Dragon Hoard Frames, Book Cover Frames, and Dwarven Language cards. Additionally, The Hobbit will feature Scene Boxes, akin to the Universes Beyond Final Fantasy release. The set’s headliner, a special gilded version of Smaug the Magnificent, will be exclusive to Collector Booster packs and will be released on August 14, with Gift Bundles following on September 4, and a Battle of Five Armies Co-op Kit in 2027.

The Universes Within set, Reality Fracture, introduces a new plane called Hexhaven, a mirrored version of Strixhaven with altered magical college color pairings. A unique feature of this set is that booster packs containing a character will also include its “flipped” version, guaranteeing both cards. For example, a typically red Chandra, Torch of Defiance will appear as a mono-blue Chandra, Chill of Compliance. The headliner for Reality Fracture is the Bloodline Recollector creature, illustrated by Mark Poole with a borderless, textless treatment. This card features a “what-if” ability inspired by Ancestral Recall, reimagined for black mana as Ancestral Craving. Reality Fracture will continue the narrative from Secrets of Strixhaven, exploring a multiverse where Jace Beleren has established a base in Hexhaven, featuring five reimagined colleges with allied color pairings: Fatehold (Blue/White), Theorix (Blue/Black), Stingerquill (Black/Red), Konstrari (Red/Green), and Vigorbloom (Green/White). The set launches on October 2.

Wizards of the Coast also revealed details about the Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes collaboration. Following the pattern of the Spider-Man set, this release will feature The Mind Stone artifact in three variants, including a borderless, textless version. This indestructible artifact allows players to flicker any permanent and can be used as a mana source. It will be found in Collector Booster packs. The set will also include a Jumpstart booster box product, similar to MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender. Two variants of The Vision character card were also shown. The Marvel Super Heroes set is scheduled for release on June 26.

Mark Rosewater, Head Designer of Magic: The Gathering, announced Mood Swings, a new trading card game developed over nearly three decades. Designed for accessibility and speed, Mood Swings allows for games lasting under 10 minutes for two to four players. Each play box contains a randomized, ready-to-play 45-card deck, eliminating the need for deckbuilding. The game features self-explanatory cards and a simplified rules card. With a total of 133 cards planned, each deck will consist of 23 commons, 14 uncommons, 6 rares, and 2 mythic rares. Mood Swings will launch exclusively on MTGSecretLair.com on June 1, with each deck priced at $24.99.

MagicCon Las Vegas 2026 also featured previews of cards from The Hobbit, with additional images available in a gallery on the official WOTC website.
