Microsoft’s Gaming Reset Faces A Hard Reality In XBOX’s Latest Earnings
Despite a disappointing financial report from Microsoft indicating a sharp downturn in its gaming sector (Xbox) for the fourth quarter, Asha Sharma maintains a positive outlook for fiscal year 2027.
Xbox has once again been a topic of news. Microsoft's 10-K SEC filing reveals that the company behind the Halo franchise has continued to experience a substantial loss in revenue at the close of its fiscal year 2026, Q4. The filing indicates a decrease in the gaming division's revenue by $1.7 billion, or 7%, attributed to a decline in sales of console content, services, and hardware.
Interestingly, the company as a whole has shown continued growth, with an 18% increase in revenue, yet the gaming division has been a source of losses. This is occurring despite widespread layoffs, which were described as a company "reset" by CEO Asha Sharma, who also referred to it as a "recommitment to gaming investment." It is noteworthy that Xbox experienced significant outages shortly before the recent launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved.
Following a challenging year, Xbox's revenue from content and services saw a 5% decrease, while hardware revenue declined by 29% due to lower console sales volume. Microsoft attributes the drop in hardware sales to the volatile RAM market, which consequently drove up Xbox console prices. Asha Sharma addressed the financial report release on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Over 200 million new players came to Xbox and our games, but our business did not grow with our audience. We need to close that gap by investing in what players value," adding, "we expect to return to growth by the end of FY27."
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also commented on the earnings call, saying, "When it comes to Xbox, we are making the necessary decisions required across our content portfolio, platform, and operations to reset the business for long-term growth," and further added, "We have the best IP in the industry and talented studios around the world, and believe we can bring these strengths together and return the business to growth in Fiscal 2027."
Sharma had previously declared the company's recommitment to game investment, only for the company to lay off 1,600 employees the following week, with another 1,600 expected in 2027.
