EA SPORTS FC 27 Preview: Exciting New Features and Gameplay Enhancements

The annual release of sports simulation titles, such as EA SPORTS FC 27, presents a unique cycle for both developers and players. Gamers invest time in perfecting their in-game teams and save files, only to start anew with each new installment. Meanwhile, developers strive to maintain game balance, especially in online modes, before resetting the progress with the next iteration. A recent visit to the EA Vancouver campus offered a glimpse into what's new for FC 27, and the outlook is highly promising.

The Grounds: A New Open-World Hub

A significant addition is "The Grounds," a novel, small-scale open-world environment. Players join servers with up to 100 other participants, engaging in smaller matches like one-on-one, two-on-two, and three-on-three. Popular modes such as Rush are also available. Players can customize their avatars to stand out in this dynamic setting. The extensive offerings within The Grounds suggest it will be a central point of evolution throughout the year, and early impressions are very positive.

Gameplay Overhaul: Listening to Player Feedback

EA SPORTS FC 27 places a strong emphasis on incorporating player feedback to refine and improve gameplay. Several key areas have seen significant enhancements or complete redesigns.

Corner Kick Precision

A standout gameplay update is the revamped corner kick system. Players now have unprecedented control over players in the penalty area. Beyond selecting the target area, power, and angle of the kick, a new mechanic allows players to briefly zoom into the penalty box, giving them a window to manually control a specific player. This includes adjusting their position, initiating runs, and shielding opponents. The limited timeframe demands quick decision-making, as players in the box no longer automatically find optimal positions. This makes scoring from corners more skill-based and rewarding. Missed opportunities can also now lead to new counter-attack possibilities.

The "Avoidance" feature, activated by holding R1 (PlayStation) or RB (Xbox) while controlling a player in the box, helps evasiveness and movement through crowded areas. This proved effective in practice, making a noticeable difference in tight penalty areas. However, successful corner execution still relies on player attributes, demanding strong offensive and defensive play.

"One of the primary objectives for EA SPORTS FC 27's gameplay was to actively listen to player feedback and implement adjustments accordingly."

Enhanced Attacking Play

Attacking Spatial Awareness has been significantly improved. AI-controlled teammates are now more cognizant of their positioning and surroundings, leading to smarter off-ball runs, better separation from markers, and improved passing options. While not every attacking move will be perfect, players will experience more dynamic and threatening offensive plays.

Complementing this are two new manually triggered mechanics: Triggered Curved Runs and Pass & Follow Runs. Pass & Follow Runs are initiated immediately after passing, while Triggered Curved Runs allow players to direct a teammate's run into open space. These are executed with specific button combinations (L1 + R1 on PlayStation or LB + RB on Xbox for Triggered Curved Runs; adding X or A for Pass & Follow Runs). Both mechanics are effective when used judiciously, but their success depends on the player's timing and strategic decision-making.

Furthermore, the distance for manually triggered runs has been limited to approximately 15 meters. This reduces the likelihood of players running into offside positions, offering greater control over player positioning on the field.

"Regarding attacking play, Attacking Spatial Awareness in EA SPORTS FC 27 has received a substantial upgrade, making AI players more aware of their space and surrounding actions."

Defensive Improvements

Defensive mechanics have also seen notable updates. AI Auto Tackling's influence has been reduced, granting players more manual control over defending. AI defenders will now maintain position more often rather than automatically attempting tackles, unless the ball is loose. This shift empowers players to decide when to challenge for possession.

Teammate Contain now sees AI teammates marking attackers from a greater distance, encouraging more active manual defending. AI-controlled interceptions have also been dialed back, with AI players having reduced reach for interceptions, while manually controlled players retain their reach, further promoting player agency in defense.

Career Mode Innovations

Manager Career mode introduces several impactful updates. The new "Dynamic OVR" feature dynamically adjusts player overall ratings based on recent form, happiness, morale, fitness, and availability. Players performing poorly or lacking match fitness may see their ratings decrease, while consistent performers with high morale can experience boosts.

The transfer market has been enhanced with smarter AI decisions, new cutscenes, and a more realistic transfer process. A partnership with TransferRoom, a professional football transfer platform, has led to a new player valuation model. Player values now fluctuate dynamically throughout a season or career, influenced by form, morale, and league strength, making transfers feel more authentic.

The transfer process itself has been expanded, with stages like seeking permission to speak with a player, negotiating fees, and bonuses taking more in-game time, leading to a more immersive experience. "Manager Live Creator Challenges" allow players to design, publish, and share custom career scenarios, setting season-long goals and league-specific objectives for friends to tackle.

Ultimate Team Updates

As the most popular mode, Ultimate Team receives several new features. "The FUT Gallery" is a collection-based system where players can gather cards based on various themes like nationality, league, or club. Players can add any card they've owned at any point, even if it's no longer in their club or has been used in an SBC, to a relevant set. Completing sets unlocks score rankings that can be improved with higher-rated players. As Gallery levels increase, players earn rewards including cosmetics, tokens, and potentially holographic player cards.

"Streamlined SBCs" is a welcome quality-of-life update. SBCs now only require player rating and rarity, removing position and chemistry requirements. This allows for more flexibility in team building, enabling the use of players who might otherwise go unused and still providing value for rewards.

While direct gameplay of Career Mode and Ultimate Team was not possible, the preview suggests significant depth and excitement for both modes in EA SPORTS FC 27. The game is set to release on September 25th, 2026, with Early Access starting September 18th. Pre-orders are currently available across various platforms.
