The Lost Wild: A Preview of Intense Survival Horror at SGF 2026

Attending events like Summer Game Fest Play Days often means encountering games without prior knowledge, which was the case with Annapurna Interactive’s The Lost Wild. A mystery appointment led to discovering this title, announced at SGF, which I found to be a deeply engaging experience, albeit one I might prefer to watch others play rather than play myself.

The core gameplay loop of The Lost Wild is built around three principles: “Observe. Adapt. Evade.” This hands-off demo, lasting about 20 minutes, showcased the game’s world, narrative, and palpable tension. It’s a departure from my usual “run-and-gun” style, demanding significant patience and a strong will.

“The Lost Wild will require patience and nerves of steel.”

The narrative of The Lost Wild centers on a compelling mystery. Players assume the role of Saskia, who awakens on an unfamiliar island with no memory of how she got there. While dinosaurs are a significant and terrifying presence, they are not the sole threat. The island harbors a deeper enigma concerning the few human inhabitants, and uncovering this truth is crucial for survival against the more immediate dangers.

This is not a game about direct combat. As Saskia, a lone woman facing prehistoric predators, direct confrontation is unrealistic. The game provides non-lethal tools, but the primary focus is on evasion. Unlike typical game encounters where enemies swarm, the dinosaurs in The Lost Wild behave like true predators. They stalk their prey—the player—and employ realistic ambush tactics.

The preview revealed a surprisingly gory aspect to the game. Witnessing an NPC being attacked by a dinosaur was harrowing, significantly amplifying the inherent tension. The gameplay demands careful management of your location and emotional state, both in-game and potentially in real life, to avoid alerting enemies or succumbing to panic. The atmosphere is incredibly tense, enhanced by beautiful graphics that create a convincing world and intensify the terrifying experience.

“Great Ape Games is crafting an intensely engaging experience with The Lost Wild.”

Every element of The Lost Wild contributes to an intense, slow-paced experience, a deliberate design choice by Great Ape Games. Saskia’s forced methodical and stealthy approach heightens the sense of unease as she navigates the environment. Even areas where signs of human presence are found are imbued with suspense and dread, elevating it beyond a simple monster game.

A key takeaway from the preview is that The Lost Wild prioritizes survival over combat. Success hinges on stealth, careful observation, and making deliberate decisions about movement and timing, rather than engaging in direct fights. The anticipation of learning more about Saskia’s journey and the game’s evolving mechanics is high.

While The Lost Wild is certainly not a game I’d play alone in the dark, it’s one I’m incredibly eager to watch others play. This, for me, is the highest praise—it’s simply too unnerving to play myself. Despite my own apprehension, Great Ape Games is undeniably creating a profoundly intense experience with The Lost Wild.

The Lost Wild is slated for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
