Mistbound: A New Digital CCG Spin-Off of Guild Wars Arrives on Mobile

The creators behind the renowned Guild Wars franchise have unveiled Mistbound, an official spin-off designed to merge the epic world of the MMO with the engaging strategy of deck-building games.

Prepare to bring the Guild Wars experience to a digital tabletop. ArenaNet, in partnership with NC and published globally by Bilibili, has announced this new venture, which is not a direct sequel to Guild Wars 3. Introducing Mistbound, the first Collectible Card Game (CCG) set within the rich lore of Guild Wars, offering players a fresh way to interact with the popular MMO’s universe. A trailer showcasing the game’s features is now available.

Mistbound will leverage the franchise’s extensive lore, memorable characters, and distinctive art and music to create a vibrant digital tabletop experience. While Guild Wars is celebrated for its vast adventures, Mistbound promises new strategic layers and content across both single-player and multiplayer modes, allowing fans to connect with the world of Tyria in a novel way. In Mistbound, players assume the role of a commander, deploying cards onto a 5×3 tactical grid to outmaneuver opponents. This innovative system, known as Dynamic Movement Gameplay, allows cards to move in multiple directions each turn, ensuring each match offers unique strategic challenges, setting it apart from many existing CCGs.

Baek Hakjun, known professionally as “Kranich,” a seasoned CCG designer and former professional Hearthstone player, is a Game Designer for Mistbound. He commented on the game’s design philosophy: “At first, the game is approachable. Placing units on a battlefield and engaging in combat is intuitive, allowing new players to learn quickly. But as you continue playing, you begin focusing on the significance of every turn and every decision. Eventually, you discover the satisfaction of reading and controlling the entire board.” This highlights Mistbound‘s design as easy to learn but difficult to master. ArenaNet has also detailed several key in-game mechanics:

  • Dynamic Movement: Mistbound departs from traditional static battlefields, introducing a dynamic 5×3 tactical grid. Both commanders and units possess the ability to move, reposition, and outmaneuver opponents freely.
  • Commander × Profession System: Similar to other popular CCGs, Mistbound features powerful cards, based on iconic Guild Wars characters, that act as commanders, each with unique abilities, traits, and tactical identities. Uniquely, ArenaNet incorporates the nine professions from Guild Wars 2, allowing for diverse strategies and on-the-fly adaptation. This system preserves the franchise’s signature combat styles while enabling players to craft their own preferred playstyle, echoing the flexibility of Guild Wars 2.
  • A True Guild Wars Experience: Mistbound aims to captivate the established Guild Wars fanbase by featuring beloved characters with a refined presentation that blends epic gameplay with detailed artistry. This approach allows Mistbound to forge its own identity while paying homage to the visual aesthetic of Guild Wars, reimagining it for a new strategic arena.

Development for this collaboration between ArenaNet, NC, and Bilibili is still in its early stages, with no official release date announced. However, it has been confirmed for release on mobile and PC. A call to “Stay tuned for pre-registration” was featured at the end of the trailer.
