Entering the AION 2 preview at Summer Game Fest 2026, there was a significant anticipation. Initial short trailers left some concern about the game potentially being just another generic MMORPG. However, NCSoft, with their extensive experience in the genre through titles like the original AION, Guild Wars 2, the Blade & Soul franchise, and the more recent Throne & Liberty, has a proven track record. The question remained: could they deliver a fresh and innovative experience?
The answer is a resounding yes. During a hands-off demonstration, the sheer beauty of AION 2 was so striking that the attendees found themselves searching for new adjectives to describe it, a testament to the breathtaking character models and scenery.
While some older games might struggle to render such detail without performance issues, AION 2 leverages modern technology, including a heavily customized Unreal Engine 5. This technological advancement is a key factor that the development team was eager to showcase, and it has clearly paid off, resulting in a visually stunning MMORPG.
AION 2 was designed with verticality as a core principle, meaning combat is not confined to horizontal planes but extends upwards.
Despite its immense size—reportedly 36 times larger than the original AION—the recommended system requirements for such a visually rich game are surprisingly accessible, with the notable exception of the 100GB storage requirement. The developers have also hinted at potential GeForce NOW support and a wide array of graphical settings for players to customize their visual experience.

There’s no need to wait for high levels to unlock aerial capabilities. While flight stamina will increase over time, the freedom to take to the skies is immediate.
AION 2 will feature eight distinct classes, catering to traditional MMORPG roles such as tanks, damage dealers, and healers. These classes encompass a variety of combat styles, including ranged magic and archery, elemental attacks, in-combat resurrection abilities, stealth, and the classic melee warrior archetype.

A unifying characteristic across all classes is the emphasis on verticality in combat. This means battles will occur not only on the ground but also in the air, a feature that promises a unique combat dynamic. While requiring player coordination, these aerial battles are made possible by the game’s signature wings.
This vertical combat mechanic is a novel feature, and its full impact on gameplay, particularly in raids and dungeons where ground and air coordination will be crucial, remains to be seen. When asked about what sets AION 2 apart, NCSoft’s Chief Business Officer, Seung-Uk Baek, highlighted the “fast-paced, action-based battle system” and the “verticality with the flying system,” emphasizing the potential for aerial combat as a unique offering. Director of Operations, Daniel LaFuente, added that “Flight feels great. Flight is ingrained in every part of the game.”
The dungeon system in AION 2 appears to be a blend of familiar and potentially challenging content. While many MMORPGs force players into group content or offer less engaging solo experiences, AION 2 aims to provide fulfilling gameplay for all styles. The game offers three distinct types of dungeon-like content: Sanctuary, Expeditions, and Nightmare.
Sanctuary will function similarly to raids in other MMORPGs, requiring a group of eight players to overcome trash mobs and bosses. Expeditions are akin to traditional dungeons, designed for groups of four. Nightmare dungeons are specifically tailored for solo players, indicating that solo content will be robust and not an afterthought.
While group play is a priority, NCSoft has assured that AION 2 will cater to a wide range of playstyles. As LaFuente stated, “We have play styles for everyone: solo, group play, crafters, collectors. We really want everybody to have something they can do in AION, so that it feels like a game that you can join a community and really contribute in a way that feels best to you.”
AION 2 is shaping up to be one hell of an MMORPG.
For players who value customization, AION 2 boasts an extensive character creator, offering deep control over appearance. The game will also feature a vast array of cosmetic items, including full outfits, wings, and individual pieces, which are purely for aesthetic purposes and do not impact gameplay. While some cosmetics will be purchasable, a significant portion will be earnable through in-game activities. The game already includes over 200 pets and mounts, with more than 100 of these being earnable rather than purchasable.
Although the original AION is a significant title, the NCSoft team has confirmed that knowledge of the first game is not required to enjoy AION 2. While there will be Easter eggs and nods for returning players, AION 2 is designed as a standalone experience. Developed 18 years after its predecessor, it aims to attract a new generation of players with modern technology and hardware.
With a tentative release date set for September 2026 on Steam and NCSoft’s own launcher, PURPLE, AION 2 is positioning itself as a significant MMORPG. NCSoft appears committed to offering diverse playstyles and extensive customization, promising an experience that accommodates all types of gamers. The primary challenge for players may lie in mastering the unique vertical combat system.
