Sony Implements Substantial Price Increase for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal Globally
Sony has revealed another significant price adjustment for its PlayStation 5 consoles, marking the largest increase observed to date. The company attributes this decision to persistent "economic pressures" globally.
Consumers interested in purchasing a PS5 at its current price have a limited window, as the new pricing takes effect on April 2, 2026. From this date, the standard PS5 model will see its cost rise by $150 compared to its original launch price. These price increases will affect PlayStation systems across various regions, including the PlayStation Portal.
Here are the updated prices:
United States
- PS5 Standard: $649.99
- PS5 Digital: $599.99
- PS5 Pro: $899.99
Canada
- PS5 Standard: CAD $819.99
- PS5 Digital: CAD $749.99
- PS5 Pro: CAD $1,099.99
United Kingdom
- PS5 Standard: £569.99
- PS5 Digital: £519.99
- PS5 Pro: £789.99
Europe
- PS5 Standard: €649.99
- PS5 Digital: €599.99
- PS5 Pro: €899.99
Japan
- PS5 Standard: ¥97,980
- PS5 Digital: ¥89,980
- PS5 Pro: ¥137,980
The new pricing for the PlayStation Portal is as follows:
- U.S.: $249.99
- Canada: CAD $319.99
- U.K.: £219.99
- Europe: €249.99
- Japan: ¥39,980
In an official statement, Isabelle Tomatis, Sony's Global Marketing Vice President, explained the rationale: "Amidst sustained challenges in the global economic landscape, we have made the decision to raise the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and the PlayStation Portal remote player worldwide. We acknowledge that price adjustments impact our community, and after thorough consideration, we determined this step was essential to continue providing innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players globally."
This marks the second price increase for PlayStation systems, following an initial $50 hike in August 2025. This development occurs during a period of volatility for both the technology and gaming sectors. Xbox previously increased its console prices in October, setting the Xbox Series X at $649.99. Meanwhile, Nintendo raised the price of its original Switch in August 2025, though the price of the Switch 2 remains unchanged for now, despite the company's openness to future adjustments. The cost of components and GPUs has also escalated dramatically, making it increasingly difficult to assemble or upgrade a high-performance gaming PC.
Experts attribute these challenges largely to the unpredictable nature of tariffs and disruptions to trade caused by global conflicts. Analysts have consistently cautioned about the severe ramifications tariffs could impose on the video game industry.
Given that this console generation is approaching its sixth year, it appears improbable that these prices will decrease before the introduction of the next generation of gaming hardware.
