Lorcana's Hyperia City: New Set Introduces Ink Drops Mechanic

The trading card game Disney Lorcana is set to launch its 14th set, Hyperia City, in October. This expansion focuses on a metropolis where magic, technology, and magic inks converge. The city draws inspiration from Disney's animation history and its theme parks, embodied by the Multidisciplinary Academy for Genius, Imagination, & Creativity (M.A.G.I.C.).

A key innovation in Hyperia City is the introduction of ink drops. This new mechanic alters card play by allowing players to expend these counters to pay for one ink, offering an alternative to discarding cards into the Inkwell. Unlike the Inkwell, ink drops are expendable and do not reset between turns, creating new strategic interactions.

New cards are designed around this mechanic. Some, like the song "Higitus Figitus," generate three ink drops upon play. Others, such as "Go Go Tomago—Extreme Tester," create one drop when challenged. Certain cards benefit from accumulated ink drops; "Wasabi—Called Into Battle," for instance, gains a +2 strength bonus when holding multiple drops, enhancing his Twin Blades ability.

Each of the six ink colors interacts with ink drops differently. Amber cards, for example, focus on providing drops to all players. Players can track these drops using token cards found in packs, dice, or other methods.

The set features new interpretations of iconic Disney characters like Tiana, Rapunzel, and Cinderella. Hyperia City also incorporates music-themed cards, including those from The Goofy Movie, and introduces Coco with the card "Remember Me," which allows players to return characters from the discard pile to the battlefield. Cards like "Powerline—Megastar" are designed to benefit decks built around the Singer type.

Among the announced Iconic-rarity cards are "Cinderella—Unintentional Icon" and "Mickey Mouse—Best In Town." These cards reflect the city's nighttime ambiance, with Mickey preparing hot dogs and Cinderella's dress featuring subtle pumpkin carriage embroidery.

Hyperia City prerelease events begin on October 16, with the full set releasing on October 23. Prior to this, players can engage in "The Great Hunny Rescue," the third Illumineer’s Quest, starting October 2. This collaborative mode involves teaming up with characters from the Hundred Acre Wood to combat a spreading vine.

Looking ahead, Ravensburger has announced the subsequent set, Into the Inkdark, scheduled for February 12, 2027. This set will focus on villains like Hades, Mother Gothel, and Gaston, featuring Hades' Dark Illuminary. Following this, Cosmic Quest, the final set of Disney Lorcana's "Year 4," is slated for Q2 2027 and will introduce robots from Wall-E.
