Sony and Honda Cancel Afeela Electric Car Project
After years of announcements and presentations, the Afeela electric car project, a collaboration between Sony and Honda, has been definitively canceled. Neither of the two initially planned models will see the light of day, leaving Afeela as an unfulfilled concept.
The joint venture Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) was established in 2022 with the goal of bringing the Afeela 1 and 2 models to fruition. These electric vehicles were conceived with an initial design by Sony and were intended to be produced in Honda's factories. However, Honda is currently undergoing a radical review of its electric vehicle strategy.
Due to a challenging economic period, Honda has decided to cut several ongoing projects and reorganize its future plans for electric vehicles, leading to the cancellation of the Afeela project.
Neither Afeela Model Will Be Produced
Sony's venture into the electric automotive sector began in 2020 with the Vision-S concept car, which was intended to be the precursor to the Afeela project.
Although Afeela had been presented on various occasions over the past years, garnering considerable interest, the project never managed to find its way to mass production. The interior of Afeela was notable in early presentations. Meanwhile, the electric car market experienced explosive growth, potentially rendering the Afeela project obsolete even before launch.
Honda's recent financial difficulties, which saw losses of $15 billion according to the latest financial data, were the decisive factor in the project's definitive cancellation.
The car had generated particular interest among gamers, as Sony intended to integrate PlayStation-related features, such as compatibility with the DualSense controller and the ability to use Remote Play directly within the vehicle.
