Professor Layton and The New World of Steam: First Time on PlayStation and PC
Level5 has announced that Professor Layton and The New World of Steam will launch on PlayStation 5 and PC, alongside its previously confirmed Nintendo Switch and future Switch 2 releases. This marks a significant milestone as it's the first time the beloved puzzle-adventure series will be available on a PlayStation console or PC.
The game is slated for a 2026 release, though a specific date has not yet been revealed. A new trailer showcased during Level5's recent livestream offered a glimpse into the series' ambitious return, highlighting new details and features.
Moving beyond the visual novel style and puzzle-based gameplay of previous titles, The New World of Steam will introduce fully 3D environments for the first time. Players will be able to navigate the streets of the American city of Steam Bison from a first-person perspective, exploring the world while still utilizing point-and-click mechanics to interact with scenes.
The game will also boast full 3D cutscenes and mouse support across all platforms except the Nintendo Switch. Level5 has teased that it will feature the "most puzzles" in the franchise's history, with puzzle design by Quicknock. The soundtrack will be composed by Joe Hisaishi, known for his work with Studio Ghibli.
The Japanese voice cast has also been revealed:
- Professor Layton – Yo Oizumi
- Luke – Mio Imada
- Elinora & Elida – Riho Yoshioka
- Eggmuffin – Mahiro Takasugi
- Allinston – Shiny Kote
- Sheriff Bobsley – Koichi Yamadera
- Falcon – Akio Otsuka
- Mystella – Michaela Wako Sato
The last mainline installment, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, was released in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS. While there have been several spin-off titles since then, including Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2012) and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy (2017), The New World of Steam represents a new chapter for the series.
