Nintendo Switch 2 Production Cut Amidst Weak Holiday Sales, EU Regulations Possible Factor
Reports indicate that Nintendo is scaling back the production of its Switch 2 console, following holiday sales that fell short of expectations. According to a Bloomberg report, Nintendo initially planned to manufacture six million Switch 2 units this quarter but has now reduced that target by a significant 33%, aiming for four million.
This production adjustment comes despite data showing the Nintendo Switch 2 is currently outselling its predecessor in the United States, performing 45% better than the original console at a similar point in its lifecycle.
In a recent financial earnings report, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged that "overseas sales were slightly weaker than our expectations." While overall global hardware and software sales forecasts remain unchanged, he noted that "domestic hardware sales volume exceeded our expectations, while overseas sales were slightly weaker than our expectations," which is believed to be the primary driver behind the reduced production output.
Another potential factor for the scaled-down production could be Nintendo's preparations for a new console variant. Japanese outlet Nikkei suggests that Nintendo is preparing to launch a revised Switch 2 model in Europe. This new version would aim to comply with European Battery Regulations introduced in 2024, which mandate that by 2027, consumer products utilizing portable lithium-ion batteries must feature user-replaceable batteries, aligning with the EU's 'right to repair' policy.
Despite these production cuts and not fully meeting sales forecasts, the Switch 2 has maintained its status as Nintendo's fastest-selling console at launch, surpassing even the original Nintendo Switch. With a strong lineup of exclusive titles such as Pokémon Pokopia, and eagerly anticipated upcoming releases like Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be on a stable trajectory.
