Fortnite to Permanently Remove Three Major Modes to Cut Costs
Epic Games has announced a general reorganization that includes the permanent elimination of three significant in-game modes from Fortnite, as part of its cost-cutting strategy.
As part of Epic Games' recently announced reorganization aimed at reducing costs and involving substantial staff layoffs, the company has revealed its intention to permanently discontinue three major Fortnite game modes.
These mass layoffs, set to affect over 1000 employees, are part of a broader financial strategy. The company's economic situation appears to have been significantly impacted by current market conditions and a general decline in player interest for Fortnite.
Consequently, this restructuring effort not only involves changes to Epic Games' workforce but also, it seems, a re-evaluation of Fortnite's internal content and organization.
Fortnite's Metaverse Vision Undergoes Changes
In line with a comprehensive review of resource allocation and content maintenance for Fortnite, the following ancillary game modes are slated for removal:
- Ballistic
- Festival Battle Stage
- Rocket Racing
These modes represent some of Fortnite's key secondary activities, which were initially designed to expand the original game towards the 'metaverse' vision that Epic Games introduced several years ago.
Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage are scheduled to cease operations on April 16th, while Rocket Racing will be deactivated in October, giving players a few more months to enjoy this latter option.
It is evident that Epic Games is undertaking a significant scaling back of its flagship creation—the platform-game that dominated the industry for years and helped the company achieve remarkable success.
However, it's important to note that these are secondary modes and their removal does not directly impact Fortnite's core battle royale experience, which Epic Games intends to continue investing in, albeit under a reorganized operational structure.
Rocket Racing was an arcade-style battle racing game that integrated elements from Rocket League, a title that joined the Epic Games portfolio following the acquisition of Psyonix.
Festival Battle Stage is a music-based rhythm game battle, linked to the Fortnite Festival platform, which has previously hosted various special collaborations with prominent musical artists.
Fortnite Ballistic, introduced in late 2024, was conceived as a "tactical" version of the shooter, aiming to emulate a Counter-Strike-like experience, but it ultimately struggled to attract a substantial community.
