Daybreak Games has unveiled EverQuest Legends, a new initiative conceptually similar to titles like World of Warcraft Classic or Old School RuneScape. Its aim is to bring the historic 1999 MMORPG back to our screens in a form as close to the original as possible, while incorporating several revisions to make it more accessible. Notably, it appears to have been designed with the needs of contemporary players in mind, assuming they now have significantly less free time than they did decades ago. This project specifically targets fans of the original game, for whom nearly thirty years have passed since their initial experience.
The core idea is simple: many of the players who discovered EverQuest in the late 90s are now adults over thirty and can no longer dedicate entire days to gaming. As executive producer David Youssefi clearly summarized the project, EverQuest Legends is "for those who don't have time to play EverQuest."
The new title has indeed been engineered to accommodate shorter play sessions and a more flexible gameplay style. According to the official presentation, the game was conceived "from the outset to appeal to players who prefer to play alone and/or casually." While groups of up to four people and raids for up to eight players will still be present, the entire experience can also be tackled solo, "if that's your playstyle."
One of the key elements will be the character progression system: players will be able to combine two classes right from creation and add a third at level 10, allowing for approximately 560 possible combinations. The objective is to enable the creation of highly powerful and versatile characters, capable of handling even the most challenging content alone or with small groups of friends.
The studio further emphasizes that "the additional power granted to characters and the advantages of a modernized experience" will allow MMO veterans to progress "at their own pace and build their own adventures, alone or with others." In other words, even a solo player will be able to create a hero strong enough to face the most difficult challenges and acquire the game's rarest equipment.
EverQuest Legends is scheduled for release in July 2026, with the closed beta expected to commence as early as next month.
