Epic Games Dismisses Creator of Fortnite's Iconic Jonesy
Vitaliy Naymushin, the highly regarded character art director behind Fortnite's distinctive visual style and iconic characters such as Jonesy, is among the more than a thousand employees recently let go by Epic Games.
With a tenure spanning over eleven years, Naymushin played a pivotal role in shaping the aesthetic of Fortnite's characters, including early models like Ramirez and Penny. His most recognized contribution, Jonesy, evolved into the game's unofficial mascot, based on Ben Shafer's initial concept.
A Stark Reality: No One Is Immune
Naymushin's professional profile highlights his fundamental role in "defining Fortnite's 3D character style" and populating "much of the original cast." He now faces the challenge of seeking new employment.
In a candid LinkedIn post, Naymushin shared his disbelief and bittersweet reflection: "It's strange. After 11 years, I find myself no longer working at Epic. It's been an incredible journey, with its share of highs and lows. Witnessing Fortnite's evolution from its nascent stages to its current global phenomenon and being a part of it was a truly unique experience." He extended empathy to fellow laid-off colleagues and offered encouragement to those still at Epic.
The announcement drew a wave of support from former colleagues and industry peers. Director Gavin Moran credited Naymushin, stating, "Fortnite is Fortnite because of you," while Ben Shafer described him as "the glue of the group." Dakota Sager-Leonard lauded him as "an extraordinary leader and a true industry legend."
This departure marks a substantial void for Fortnite, underscoring the urgency for the project to re-establish its strategic direction to avoid potential pitfalls.
