The announcement of Damon and Baby, the new project by Guilty Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari, surprised many fans. Contrary to expectations, it's not a fighting game but a top-down action RPG. Ishiwatari revealed that this game marks a significant step for Arc System Works: the company aims to produce smaller-scale titles while maintaining high quality standards. The ambitious goal is to create an original action RPG that stands out in the indie scene and, in the author's words, can "rival Castlevania" in cultural impact.
Development and Internal Strategy
Damon and Baby's development process was gradual. Initially conceived as a side-scrolling shooter, it evolved into a twin-stick shooter with strong action RPG elements, blending firearm combat with an imagery of demons and monsters. This evolution reflects the team's desire to innovate, avoiding "copy-pasting existing elements."
Beyond creative ambition, the project serves a clear internal strategy: to offer young Arc System Works developers the opportunity to explore different genres and gain comprehensive experience in game development, from start to finish.
Ishiwatari also highlighted the challenges of creating an "indie-style title" within a large company, where costs and personnel naturally tend to increase. To overcome these, the team adopted a leaner development cycle, reducing time spent on documentation to focus more on gameplay, exploration, and action-puzzles. Nevertheless, the challenge will be present: boss battles promise to be intense, inspired by "bullet hell" shooters.
Damon and Baby is set to release on March 26 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
