Buffy Reboot Canceled: Sarah Michelle Gellar Breaks Silence On Why
Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated Buffy reboot, expressing her profound surprise by stating, "nobody saw this coming." The revelation came during an interview promoting her upcoming film, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
The Buffy reboot had generated considerable buzz since its initial announcement, with Gellar poised to return as the iconic Buffy Summers. However, to her astonishment, she was informed that Searchlight Pictures would not be moving forward with the project. This news was delivered to her during the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere of her film Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, which is another Searchlight Pictures production.
In an interview with People, Gellar disclosed that she and everyone involved in the production were completely caught off guard by the decision. She noted the uncanny timing, as she received a phone call with the news on a Sunday afternoon, just as she was about to go on stage "in front of all the fans." The Buffy reboot had been confirmed in February 2025, and since then, Gellar had been collaborating with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao on the revival for Hulu and Searchlight Television.
Gellar recounted, "I’ve been asked since the day I left to return to Sunnydale." She added that four years prior, Chloé Zhao – whom she affectionately described as "the witch that she is — and I say that as a good thing" – entered her life. "In one meeting, she makes me say ‘yes’ to something I never saw on my radar. That was because of the deep love and commitment and passion she had for this character. It was like I was stepping back in time."
The planned series was intended to feature an emerging slayer, portrayed by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who would be in a similar stage of her journey as Buffy was at the beginning of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Gellar was set to reprise her role as Buffy, transitioning into a mentor figure for the new protagonist.
Gellar expressed suspicion regarding the timing of the announcement, stating, "No one saw this coming, including the head of Searchlight [Pictures]." She emphasized that the cancellation came at a particularly inconvenient moment for both her and Zhao, coinciding with Gellar's new film celebration and Zhao's Oscar nomination for Hamnet. Gellar further revealed, "We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him."
Gellar elaborated on the executive's attitude, noting that this unnamed individual consistently boasted about not being a fan of the original Buffy series and claimed it "wasn’t for him." The only confirmed detail is that the Buffy reboot will no longer proceed at Hulu, a development likely to disappoint many fans.
In March 2025, actor James Marsters, who famously played Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, commented, "I think the world needs Buffy. I’m glad she’s going to come back and help." However, this anticipated return has now been indefinitely postponed.
As of the time of writing, Searchlight Pictures has yet to release any official statement regarding the Buffy reboot's cancellation.
