Apple Unveils Groundbreaking iPhone Duo: A New Era of Foldable Technology
Apple has revolutionized its smartphone lineup for 2026 with the highly anticipated iPhone Duo, a groundbreaking foldable device, alongside the enhanced iPhone 18 Pro models.
The long-rumored foldable iPhone, now officially named iPhone Duo, has been revealed, marking a significant departure from previous iPhone designs. This innovative device is set to redefine the smartphone experience, offering users unprecedented flexibility and functionality. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max also feature substantial upgrades, positioning them as top-tier smartphones in the competitive market.
The iPhone Duo unfolds to reveal a expansive 7.6-inch inner display, the largest ever seen on an iPhone, while a 5.4-inch outer screen ensures the device remains compact and pocketable when closed. Adopting a passport-style form factor, similar to contemporary foldable devices, the Duo offers a seamless transition between orientations, ensuring content displays consistently across both displays. Constructed from durable Grade 5 titanium and featuring a sophisticated hinge mechanism, the Duo boasts a nano-texture finish designed to minimize glare and crease visibility. The Touch ID sensor has been integrated into the side button, and Apple Pencil support is slated for later this year.
Equipped with a new 48 MP Fusion Main camera, capable of capturing high-resolution, zero-shutter-lag photos and offering optical-quality 2x telephoto zoom, the iPhone Duo also incorporates the 48 MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera found on the Pro models. An innovative FaceTime camera is discreetly placed beneath the inner display. The unique folding design enables advanced photographic capabilities previously impossible on an iPhone, including tripod-free 4K Dolby Vision time-lapses and 4K video recording at an impressive 120 frames per second.
The device features "Smart Take" technology, utilizing on-device AI to automatically capture photos when subjects are optimally posed, and "Duo Preview," which allows subjects to see a live preview on the outer display. For younger users, "Kid Cue" plays engaging Peanuts animations to keep them looking at the camera. Additionally, users can now take selfies using the rear camera, with framing facilitated by the outer screen.
Under the hood, the iPhone Duo is powered by the new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process and featuring an advanced vapor chamber for up to 35% improved sustained performance compared to the iPhone 17 Pro. Its dual-battery system supports extended usage, offering up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and rapid charging capabilities, achieving a 50% charge in approximately 20 minutes.
iOS 27 has been extensively optimized for the Duo's folding hardware, introducing Split View multitasking for the first time on an iPhone, a two-page Home Screen layout when unfolded, and an enhanced StandBy mode that functions even when unplugged. Several popular third-party applications, including Netflix, Zoom, and Slack, have already been updated to leverage the larger foldable display.
The non-folding iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are also powered by the new A20 Pro chip, which boasts a 6-core CPU up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU up to 40% faster, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine delivering twice the AI processing power. A redesigned vapor chamber with triple the surface area ensures optimal cooling, providing what Apple describes as the highest sustained performance ever achieved in an iPhone.
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup showcases impressive camera advancements, including the introduction of variable aperture to the iPhone. This feature utilizes six laser-cut blades and four manual settings. New Pro controls offer a live histogram and an Apple Reference Image feature that cryptographically signs every photo at the sensor level to ensure authenticity. Both device lines support post-capture Cinematic effects and enhanced Photographic Styles with new texture and grain controls.
Battery life has been significantly improved, with the iPhone 18 Pro offering up to 36 hours of video playback and the iPhone 18 Pro Max up to 45 hours. The Pro models achieve a 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes. Connectivity is handled by Apple's N1 wireless chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, alongside the new C2 cellular modem.
Both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max run iOS 27, which includes the beta launch of Siri AI. This reimagined conversational assistant, powered by Apple Intelligence, will be available on September 14th. The iPhone Duo will be available in Star White and Night Sky finishes, while the Pro models will offer a new Burgundy color, in addition to Black, Silver, and Glacier.
Pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 USD, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299 USD. Pre-orders begin on September 12th, with availability on September 18th. The iPhone Duo is priced at a premium $1,999 USD, with pre-orders opening on October 16th and availability on October 23rd.
