Bungie has officially announced the conclusion of active development for Destiny 2, more than eight years after its initial release. The studio revealed plans for a series of final updates and tweaks over the coming months. The ultimate content update, named “Monument of Triumph,” is slated for release on June 9th. This update will offer players a chance to commemorate their achievements and will conclude various character arcs and the overarching narrative in intriguing ways.
In a statement on Bungie.net, the company expressed its gratitude to players: “For nearly twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all. Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.”
The studio elaborated on its future direction: “As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio. Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to.”
Coinciding with this announcement, Bungie will also launch Destiny 2: The Collection on June 9th. This comprehensive package will bundle all of the game’s existing content, including Dungeon Keys and the 30th-anniversary update. Furthermore, individual content packs and expansions will see permanent price reductions.
This strategic shift signifies a major change for Bungie, particularly following the recent launch of Marathon. However, reports indicate no immediate plans for a Destiny 3. According to Bloomberg, Bungie also anticipates a significant number of layoffs in conjunction with the winding down of Destiny 2‘s active development.
The report further suggests that while investment in Marathon‘s development is increasing, the Destiny 2 team does not currently have a new project lined up. Developers are reportedly exploring new project pitches, but no new titles have been greenlit yet, and the company’s future direction for this team remains uncertain given the current state of the video game market.
Destiny 2 originally launched in 2017 after Bungie’s separation from publisher Activision Blizzard. Despite a somewhat mixed initial reception, the game cultivated a dedicated player base through continuous updates and ambitious expansions, culminating in the critically acclaimed The Final Shape. The most recent content update, the Star Wars-themed Renegades, was released earlier this year.
It is understood that prior discussions to retool Destiny 2 to be more accessible to new players were ultimately set aside in favor of concluding active development.
Destiny 2 is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
