Phantom Blade Zero’s Combat and Story: A Deep Dive into Development Inspiration

In a recent interview conducted in China, Qiwei Liang, the creator and CEO of Phantom Blade Zero and S-Game, shared extensive details regarding the game’s development methodology and its core inspirations.

Liang detailed how the development team drew inspiration from a professional Chinese dragon dance studio. By observing the intricate movements and fluid choreography of these dancers, the team directly translated these elements into a boss fight. Motion capture technology was employed to record the dancers’ movements, which were then integrated into the game’s combat system.

Furthermore, the game features a boss fight that replicates the iconic drunken sword style. Liang explained, “The enemy will continually drink to build up a certain kind of energy. Once drunk, his movements become highly erratic, and, naturally, his attacks do as well.”

Phantom Blade Zero is described as a “Wuxia” game, a term from Chinese fiction meaning “Martial Hero.” Liang has deconstructed this concept into its core components: “Wu” (martial combat) and “Xia” (hero’s spirit). To develop the “Wu” aspect, the team visited numerous martial arts schools, adapting their observations into the game’s combat mechanics. The “Xia” element, considered more crucial to the narrative, focuses on the spirit of the hero, embodied by the main character, Soul. Soul’s inherent drive to help others, even in perilous situations, signifies the hero’s spirit. While Soul’s physical heart is nearing its end, his inner spirit faces even greater peril.

Soul has spent the first half of his life fighting for The Order, with no agency in his actions. However, with only 66 days left to live, he now has the freedom to make his own choices and explore his true identity, separate from his life of conflict. The player’s actions during side quests will shape Soul’s “Xia” or inner heart. Conversely, choosing inaction may lead to a less favorable outcome.

Liang concluded the interview by stating that the team is focused on polishing the game for its eventual release. He expressed pride in sharing the spirit of Wuxia globally, drawing a parallel to Bruce Lee’s popularization of Kung Fu in Hollywood. Phantom Blade Zero is slated for a worldwide release on September 9th, 2026.
