Bungie has released patch 1.0.0.4 for its new game, Marathon, significantly lowering the difficulty of non-player character (NPC) enemies, a change warmly received by players.
Just a week after its launch, Bungie's new extraction shooter, Marathon, has quickly garnered a substantial online community. The recently published patch notes for Update 1.0.0.4 detail various fixes, gameplay adjustments, and balance changes aimed at improving fairness, largely in response to player feedback. Following the Server Slam event on March 5, Bungie had pledged to address major community concerns, including UI issues and microtransactions, via a social media update.
A prominent concern among Marathon players since release has been the challenging difficulty of UESC units (NPCs) and their ability to prematurely end a run. In response, Bungie has rebalanced encounters by lowering the health and shields of most UESC adversaries, aiming to provide players with a more manageable experience during runs.
Bungie stated that this adjustment is intended to "alleviate some of the resource burden in both Solos and Crews when it comes to engaging UESC in combat." The developer's objective is to enable players' ammunition and medical supplies to last longer, without completely diminishing the challenging aspect these UESC units contribute to firefights.
Further enhancements include an increased spawn rate for Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates on the Perimeter map. Players using MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne Sponsored Kits (daily free loadouts) will now begin with more ammunition, aiming to extend gameplay sessions and reduce time spent in loading screens. Additionally, the visibility range for selected contract objectives has been doubled from 10m to 20m, addressing another reported community issue.
On Reddit, players have largely praised the quick adjustments, expressing gratitude to Bungie. One user specifically thanked the developers for the contract objective change, a sentiment echoed by many. Other community members highlighted specific improvements, such as the "Overrun [assault rifle] mag going from 20 to 25 rounds by default is huge for Sponsored Kit runs," and noted the widespread approval of the UESC health reduction across forums.
A Reddit user, Shpaan, encapsulated the community's sentiment: "Gotta say those are one of the best patch notes I’ve ever read in the sense that pretty much every single thing there is something I either personally struggled with or have seen multiple times mentioned on this subreddit. Bungie seems to be very reactive, and I love it; hopefully, they can keep this up." This proactive approach aligns with earlier statements from Sony in June 2025, promising to avoid past live service missteps, suggesting Marathon is beginning on a positive trajectory.
