Charlie Cox, known for his role as Daredevil, has finally had the chance to play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the game in which he voices the character Gustave. Previously, Cox had expressed feeling like an imposter for not having played the game he contributed to.
In a recent interview, Cox shared that he has indeed played a portion of the game. “I’ve played a bit of it,” he stated, clarifying, “Not the whole thing, I haven’t completed it.” He described his experience as playing through the opening sequences, exploring, meeting characters, and gathering information, but humorously admitted, “Not very well.”
Given the significant success of Expedition 33, Cox has frequently been asked about it at public events. Notably, after being nominated for Best Actor at The Game Awards, he publicly supported mocap actor Maxence Cazorla, who was instrumental in bringing Gustave to life, suggesting Cazorla was more deserving of the award.
Cox’s eventual engagement with Expedition 33 is understandable, though it appears he hasn’t been heavily involved in gaming for some time. He recalled his gaming past with titles like FIFA 98, Mario Kart, and GoldenEye 007. He also reflected on the evolving nature of video games, describing Expedition 33 as an interactive “movie you get to participate in.”
Comparing modern gaming to his earlier experiences, Cox remarked, “Those games I just listed… They weren’t, like, stories that were so carefully carved out and created over the course of a game with the level of detail and the way in which information is received.” He highlighted how Expedition 33 encourages players to discover information organically, stating, “It’s not just all spelled out – you discover these things as you go on through the game.”
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
