Following the enforcement of the United Kingdom`s new Online Safety Act, Microsoft has announced plans to introduce mandatory age verification systems on its Xbox platform. This measure, set to begin in 2026, will primarily restrict social features for unverified users under the age of 18 within the UK.
According to a recent blog post on Xbox Wire, the rollout of these new age verification systems across the UK is commencing this week. From 2026 onwards, Xbox users who have not verified their age will only be able to interact socially with individuals on their friends list. Conversely, verified adult users will retain full access to all social interaction features across the platform. Microsoft has assured users that other core functionalities, such as purchasing and playing games, will not be affected or restricted based on age verification status.
Consistent with practices on other major social platforms like Reddit and Discord, Microsoft will offer a range of methods for users to verify their age. These options will include conventional approaches, such as uploading a government-issued identification document or conducting a credit card check. Additionally, more technologically advanced methods, including age estimation using sophisticated algorithms, will be available.
The Online Safety Act, championed by policymakers as a crucial step towards protecting children from online harms, contains specific provisions that mandate platforms to verify the age of their users, particularly if the platforms host sexually explicit or pornographic material. This legislative framework has significantly motivated numerous social media platforms to proactively comply, given that the law considers user-generated content and forum discussions as potentially harmful to minors.
The rapid integration of facial recognition technology for age estimation has, somewhat unexpectedly, led to the discovery of creative workarounds. Recent reports have highlighted instances where gamers utilized the highly detailed character models from the video game Death Stranding 2 to successfully bypass these age estimation checks. As more of these machine learning-powered age verification systems become prevalent across digital platforms, it is highly probable that we will continue to witness novel attempts to circumvent the provisions of this new legislation.
