Xbox Game Pass Prices Rise: Microsoft Explains the Rationale

Microsoft has announced an increase in the subscription fees for both Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, a decision the company is now working to justify amidst player concerns.

In a statement to The Verge, Dustin Blackwell, Microsoft`s director of gaming and platform communications, acknowledged the common sentiment regarding such changes. “We understand price increases are never fun for anybody,” Blackwell said, “but we`re trying to reinforce by adding more value to these plans as well.” He further emphasized the company`s commitment, stating, “It`s something we don`t take lightly, and we`re listening to the feedback of players and the community to try to provide them with more of what they’re asking for.”

For Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, the monthly cost is set to increase from $20 to $30, marking a substantial 50% price hike. To mitigate this, Microsoft has introduced several new benefits to the membership. These include integration of Fortnite Crew, access to Ubisoft+ Classics, and improvements to the streaming experience for Xbox Cloud Gaming. It`s noteworthy, however, that many retailers have yet to implement the new pricing, meaning some subscribers might still find the lower rate available for a period.

Similarly, the price for PC Game Pass is rising from $12 to $16.50 per month. A notable new advantage for PC users is expanded access to approximately 50 additional Ubisoft games. Both Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass will continue to offer new Microsoft game releases on their respective launch days, maintaining a core appeal of the service.

These adjustments to the Game Pass subscription model follow a recent pattern, as Microsoft had previously increased the prices of its Xbox consoles in the United States, indicating a broader strategy of price recalibration across its gaming ecosystem.
