In its recent investor report at the close of the fiscal year, and following significant company-wide layoffs, Microsoft highlighted Xbox Game Pass as a standout success. The subscription service achieved a remarkable milestone, nearing $5 billion in annual revenue for the first time.
While the full transcript of Microsoft`s investor report is publicly available, it notably omits specific details regarding Game Pass`s performance, such as subscriber numbers or the exact revenue figure attained. This milestone comes after Microsoft`s decision last year to implement price increases for Game Pass and introduce Xbox Game Pass Standard, a tier that does not include day-one access to the company`s major game releases—a premium benefit exclusively reserved for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.
Microsoft also proudly announced that it was the “top publisher on both Xbox and PlayStation” during the quarter. This achievement followed the release of top-selling PlayStation games in the second quarter of 2025 in the US and was largely credited to the cross-platform success of titles like Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered. Other Microsoft-published games, including Doom: The Dark Ages, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Minecraft, also appeared on PlayStation`s Q2 bestseller charts.
The report further stated that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has garnered 50 million players to date. Additionally, the popularity of the Minecraft movie was cited as a driver for record active usage and revenue for the already immensely successful Minecraft game.
Despite recent layoffs and the cancellation of gaming projects such as Rare`s Everwild, the investor report largely avoided dwelling on these negative developments. Instead, it reaffirmed Microsoft`s continued commitment to game development, stating that the company still has “nearly 40 games in development.”
