Xbox Copilot AI Assistant Coming to Consoles This Year | GDC News

Microsoft has confirmed that its AI assistant, Copilot, will be integrated into current-generation Xbox consoles sometime later this year. This announcement was made during a panel at the Game Developers Conference (GDC). Previously, Copilot was available for beta testing on PC, mobile platforms, and the ROG Ally handheld device.

Sonia Yadav, Xbox’s gaming AI partner group product manager, highlighted the company’s goal to expand Copilot to more services utilized by players. While specific consoles weren’t detailed, “current-generation” is understood to include the Xbox Series X|S. The AI is designed to assist players with various in-game queries, such as providing reminders for crafting materials or offering guidance when they encounter difficulties. An illustrative example provided is asking, “What materials do I need to craft a sword in Minecraft?”

Despite its introduction, Copilot’s broader impact within the gaming community has yet to be fully established, as players often continue to rely on traditional guides for assistance. Interestingly, competitors such as Sony and PlayStation are also exploring similar AI-driven support, with Sony having patented an AI feature earlier this year that can demonstrate progress or even assume control within a game.

In other significant news from GDC, Microsoft announced that “Xbox Mode” will roll out to all Windows 11 PCs in April. This feature, which initially debuted on the ROG Ally, provides a full-screen, controller-optimized Xbox experience, reminiscent of Steam’s Big Picture mode. It enables users to easily browse their game library, launch games, and utilize the Game Bar. This development occurs amidst Microsoft’s ongoing strategic adjustments, including the removal of its “This is an Xbox” marketing campaign.

Additionally, Xbox unveiled the official name for its next-generation console as “Project Helix” and outlined plans to distribute development kits to studios starting next year.
