Xbox Console Prices Increasing Again in the US

For those contemplating the purchase of an Xbox console this upcoming holiday season, a prompt decision might be advantageous. Microsoft has recently announced yet another round of price hikes for its popular gaming systems, slated to become effective on October 3rd.

Detailed Price Adjustments for Xbox Consoles

Starting October 3rd, the most accessible Xbox model, the 512GB Xbox Series S, will be priced at $400 in the United States. Meanwhile, the premium Xbox Series X variant, which includes a disc drive and a substantial two terabytes of storage, will now retail for $800. Below is a comprehensive overview of the revised prices across the entire Xbox lineup:

  • Xbox Series S (512GB): $400 (previously $380)
  • Xbox Series S (1TB): $450 (previously $430)
  • Xbox Series X Digital Edition: $600 (previously $550)
  • Xbox Series X (Standard, 1TB): $650 (previously $500)
  • Xbox Series X (2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition): $800 (previously $730)

Reasons Behind the Price Hikes

This marks the second price adjustment Microsoft has implemented within the current year, following an initial increase in May. Microsoft attributes these escalations to “changes in the macroeconomic environment.” It is worth noting that console prices outside of the United States are expected to remain unaffected by these latest adjustments.

The consistent upward trend in pricing for gaming consoles, alongside their associated games and accessories, has emerged as a significant development over the past year. Industry analysts suggest a potential correlation with tariffs imposed by the current US administration, although most companies have refrained from making explicit statements regarding this connection.

An Industry-Wide Trend

Microsoft`s competitors have also adopted similar strategies. PlayStation, for example, increased its console prices earlier this year. Similarly, pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the US experienced a brief delay while Nintendo deliberated its pricing structure. Upon its eventual release, many Switch 2 games and accessories were launched with price tags higher than anticipated by consumers, and just last month, Nintendo also raised the price of the original Switch model.
