Laura Fryer, a pivotal member of the original Xbox development team, has publicly denounced Microsoft’s recent decisions to elevate the prices of Game Pass subscriptions and Xbox consoles within the US market. Fryer interprets these financial adjustments as a profound “betrayal” of the trust that the gaming community has invested in the brand, particularly in the wake of several previously exclusive Xbox titles making their way to the PlayStation 5 platform.
In her latest YouTube video, Fryer lamented what she views as the forfeiture of Xbox’s significant competitive edge. “With this latest increase to Game Pass, Xbox threw away one of their last advantages,” she asserted, highlighting the service`s former status as “the best deal in gaming.” She elaborated on her strong disappointment, stating, “With these price hikes, it feels like a betrayal, like greed over gaming… This Xbox console generation, though not yet concluded, will almost certainly be remembered primarily for Microsoft’s perceived greed.”
Fryer`s critique extended beyond merely subscription costs, encompassing a broader pattern of actions she believes undermines the brand`s standing. Her observations included two separate hardware price increases during the current generation, three distinct Game Pass price revisions, a general uptick in game prices, extensive company-wide layoffs, and the closure of multiple studios. She argued that these cumulative events cast a damaging shadow over Microsoft’s brand image.
“I believe all of these changes and drama will harm Microsoft’s brand,” Fryer declared, expressing concern for the future. She speculated that Xbox might be pivoting away from traditional console hardware towards a greater emphasis on cloud gaming, while also cautiously raising the possibility of internal “incompetence” or a fundamental disconnect from their player base. Despite her sharp criticism, Fryer conveyed a hopeful sentiment, acknowledging the presence of original team members still at Xbox. She urged, “They need to rebuild trust with gamers and fans,” concluding with encouragement, “They can fix this and I’m rooting for them and wishing them the best.”
This is not the first instance of Fryer questioning Xbox`s hardware strategy. She previously inferred that the company was distancing itself from dedicated consoles by partnering with Asus to produce the ROG Xbox Ally handheld device. In contrast, Xbox VP Jason Ronald earlier this year affirmed Microsoft’s sustained commitment to developing its future generations of proprietary hardware.
Following the recent Game Pass pricing announcements, Microsoft clarified that not all subscribers would immediately be subject to the increased rates. Simultaneously, the higher-tier Game Pass subscription is scheduled to discontinue a popular Call of Duty-related benefit. Industry analysts, looking ahead, have speculated about the potential future introduction of an ad-supported Game Pass tier, indicating further shifts in the service’s business model.
