The developers behind the popular free-to-play game, Warframe, Digital Extremes, are highly enthusiastic about creating a dedicated version for the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2. However, this ambition is currently on hold due to a critical lack of development kits. The studio has yet to receive any, citing a significant “backlog” for these essential devices.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Steve Sinclair, CEO of Digital Extremes, expressed his team`s eagerness to develop a Warframe edition specifically for the Switch 2. “Our tech team is incredibly excited to harness the Switch 2’s high-speed cores and other impressive features,” Sinclair stated, lamenting the considerable wait for dev kits.
Sinclair confirmed that there are definite plans for Warframe on the Switch 2, envisioning a custom-built version of the online action-RPG. The game is currently playable on Nintendo`s existing hybrid console through backward compatibility, having first launched in 2013 and arriving on the Switch in late 2018.
This situation echoes recent reports that the limited availability of Switch 2 development kits is impeding third-party game announcements for the console. It appears even major industry players like Capcom and Sega are facing similar delays in gaining sufficient access to these devices.
Despite being over a decade old, Warframe remains a prominent title, consistently ranking among the best free-to-play games available. Last year, it was recognized as one of the top ten gaming franchises. In addition to Warframe, Digital Extremes is also developing Soulframe, another free-to-play, open-world multiplayer RPG, but set in a fantasy universe.
