Vince Zampella, Visionary Behind Call of Duty and Battlefield Revival, Dies

The gaming world mourns the loss of Vince Zampella, co-founder of Infinity Ward and a pivotal creative force behind the original Call of Duty title. Zampella passed away following a tragic single-vehicle accident that occurred on Sunday, December 21st, in the San Gabriel Mountains. Reports indicate the car veered off the road and collided with a concrete barrier.

According to information shared by NBC4 Los Angeles, the driver tragically perished in a subsequent vehicle fire, while the passenger was thrown from the vehicle and later died at the hospital. Specific details regarding the identities of the occupants involved were not immediately available.

Zampella’s influential career began in the late 1990s, including roles at companies like GameTek, Atari, Interactive Media/Ripcord Games, and SegaSoft. In 1999, he joined 2015 Inc and served as the lead designer for the highly successful military shooter, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, which was published by Electronic Arts (EA).

Following professional conflicts with EA, Zampella, alongside Grant Collier and Jason West, established Infinity Ward. This new studio partnered with Activision and successfully launched the groundbreaking Call of Duty series in 2003. Zampella once famously commented on this formative rivalry, suggesting that the creation of the Call of Duty franchise was directly spurred by difficult relations with EA.

In 2010, Zampella and West were dismissed by Activision over claims of insubordination. The resulting high-profile lawsuit was settled outside of court for undisclosed terms. They went on to co-found Respawn Entertainment, a studio responsible for major hits such as Apex Legends, Titanfall, and the Star Wars Jedi series. Respawn was eventually acquired by EA.

In 2020, EA entrusted Zampella with overseeing DICE and the crucial task of rejuvenating the troubled Battlefield franchise. This strategic move proved highly successful, culminating in the critically praised and commercially robust launch of Battlefield 6 earlier this year.

Zampella’s immense contributions have left an indelible mark on the gaming industry, prompting an outpouring of grief and tribute across social media platforms from colleagues and fans worldwide.
