Valve co-founder Gabe Newell recently addressed the audience at The International Dota 2 tournament in Germany, revealing his deep personal connection to the game. Despite his status as a tech titan and billionaire, Newell disclosed that he continues to play Dota 2 daily, often encountering candid, and sometimes blunt, feedback from other players online.
“Before that first International [in 2011], I really enjoyed the game, but after The International, I loved the game. It`s not just the game I love, but the community. Sure, people talk crap at me in chat and about once a week, people say, `Hey, noob, uninstall the game,` but that`s really about their enthusiasm for the game and the energy that they bring. And that`s why after all these years, I still play Dota every day,” Newell shared during his remarks.
The inaugural International event took place 14 years ago in Cologne, Germany, a city also renowned for hosting Gamescom annually. This year`s highly anticipated tournament is currently being held in Hamburg, Germany, with elite teams fiercely competing for a share of a multi-million dollar prize pool.
Dota 2, a free-to-play strategy game, consistently ranks among the most popular titles on Steam. On September 11, it boasted an impressive peak of over 780,000 concurrent players, placing it second only to Valve`s other massive success, Counter-Strike 2.
Beyond Gaming: Newell`s Lifestyle and Future Vision
Away from the world of gaming, the enigmatic billionaire Gabe Newell leads a truly distinctive lifestyle. Reports indicate he resides on a yacht, frequently taking breaks between important business meetings to indulge in scuba diving. When not immersed in underwater exploration, he actively promotes the importance of artificial intelligence, urging younger generations to acquire AI skills, which he believes will be crucial for future success.
Newell`s remarkable career began when he dropped out of Harvard in the early 1980s to join Microsoft. He later departed the company as a millionaire, alongside Mike Harrington, to co-found Valve Corporation. Today, Forbes estimates his personal net worth at an astounding $9.5 billion. Despite his immense fortune, Newell remains notably approachable and connected with his fanbase, famously taking the time to personally deliver Steam Decks to customers in 2022.
