Ubisoft Forms New Dedicated Division Led by Yves Guillemot’s Son, Emphasizing GenAI’s Role in Gaming

Ubisoft, a company with a nearly 40-year family legacy led by the Guillemot brothers, continues this tradition. Yves Guillemot`s son, Charlie Guillemot, has been named co-CEO of a new, partially Tencent-funded subsidiary, alongside Ubisoft Montreal veteran Christophe Derennes.

This newly formed division is tasked with accelerating the expansion and growth of Ubisoft`s flagship franchises: Assassin`s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry.

Charlie Guillemot began his career in gaming at Owlient in 2014, a studio later acquired by Ubisoft. After leaving in 2021, he rejoined Ubisoft earlier this year, leading to his current promotion. Christophe Derennes co-founded Ubisoft Montreal in 1997 and most recently served as the managing director for Ubisoft`s North American operations.

Addressing questions from Variety about potential nepotism, Charlie Guillemot expressed full understanding of such concerns. He acknowledged his familial connection to Yves but stressed that his appointment was driven by Ubisoft`s current strategic needs, not solely by family ties.

In their new roles, Charlie will oversee the vision, strategic direction, content development, and marketing for the core franchises. Derennes, conversely, will manage production, co-development initiatives, and technological advancements.

Looking to the future, Charlie anticipates that generative AI and cloud technologies will profoundly transform game development and player experiences. He suggests this might lead to more concise content formats, catering to newer generations who consume media differently. He expressed conviction that the industry would encounter unforeseen technological disruptions, with Ubisoft aiming to actively shape this evolving future.

Guillemot`s remarks on generative AI are likely to spark debate, given widespread concerns among developers regarding its impact on job security. A recent report indicated that while most game developers globally utilize AI, worker anxieties persist. Notably, former Microsoft Candy Crush developers recently reported being replaced by the very AI tools they helped create, highlighting these concerns. Ubisoft has, for years, been a strong proponent of generative AI.

Derennes emphasized that modern video game franchises transcend mere games; they are expansive “universes” and foundational elements of contemporary pop culture.

He further elaborated in the Variety interview that franchises like Far Cry, Assassin`s Creed, and Rainbow Six have evolved into “full-fledged universes,” and the goal is to significantly broaden their reach, cultural influence, and relevance with new audiences.

The announcement of Charlie Guillemot and Christophe Derennes as co-CEOs marks the initial phase in unveiling the new subsidiary`s structure. Derennes stated that building the leadership team, defining roles, and establishing governance for this new entity is an ongoing, collaborative effort, with more work ahead before full operationalization.

Ubisoft initially disclosed this new “dedicated subsidiary” in March, revealing its focus on Assassin`s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, alongside a significant investment of over $1 billion from Tencent for a stake. Other segments of Ubisoft`s business, including The Division, Ghost Recon, and new IP development, will continue to operate independently.

Tencent secured its stake after a “competitive process” where Ubisoft evaluated various “strategic options,” with earlier reports suggesting Microsoft and EA were also considered.

This development follows a challenging year for Ubisoft, marked by extensive cost-cutting measures, including widespread layoffs, studio closures, and the discontinuation of titles like XDefiant.
