Ubisoft has officially confirmed the development of a new installment in its renowned Ghost Recon series. While rumors had been circulating for some time, the confirmation came directly from Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot during a recent shareholder meeting.
As reported by Game File, Guillemot revealed the upcoming Ghost Recon title while discussing Ubisoft`s strategy for live-service games. Highlighting the success of Tom Clancy`s Rainbow Six Siege, he stated the company`s commitment to enhancing current experiences and leveraging future releases like The Division and Ghost Recon.
Subsequently, Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet explicitly categorized the new Ghost Recon as a “first-person-shooter-type game,” signaling a notable departure for the franchise. While some earlier titles did incorporate first-person views, the series has predominantly been known for its third-person shooter gameplay since 2006`s Advanced Warfighter.
The concept of a new first-person, live-service Ghost Recon title isn`t entirely novel. Ghost Recon Wildlands (2017) achieved considerable success, although its successor, Breakpoint, received a less favorable reception. Despite this, both games benefited from extensive post-launch support. Notably, Ubisoft controversially introduced NFTs into Breakpoint in 2021.
Despite the confirmation, neither Guillemot nor Duguet provided a release timeframe, indicating the game is likely still some time away. Meanwhile, Ubisoft is engaged in other significant ventures, including spinning off several core franchises into a new division (co-led by Guillemot`s son) as part of its agreement with Tencent, and finally approving a Netflix adaptation of its popular Assassin`s Creed series.
