Twin Peaks Prequel Film Set for 4K UHD Blu-ray Release

Fans of Twin Peaks will soon have the opportunity to experience Fire Walk with Me in stunning 4K Blu-ray quality. Criterion`s 2017 restoration of David Lynch`s 1992 prequel film, originally released on Blu-ray and DVD, was based on a 4K digital master approved by Lynch himself. Eight years later, this acclaimed restoration will finally be available in full 4K UHD resolution. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is set for release on October 7 and can be pre-ordered.

Many Twin Peaks enthusiasts might have recently acquired box sets that include Fire Walk with Me or Criterion`s standard Blu-ray. Earlier this year, Paramount re-released the popular Twin Peaks: From Z to A Blu-ray collection. This comprehensive set contains all three seasons of the series, the Fire Walk with Me prequel film (in 1080p), and extensive bonus features across 21 discs. While From Z to A offers 4K versions of the Twin Peaks pilot and Season 3, Episode 8, the Fire Walk with Me included in this collection remains a standard Blu-ray.

Below is a comparison of various Twin Peaks Blu-ray and DVD editions currently available:

Twin Peaks: From Z to A – Complete Series (Blu-ray)

The Twin Peaks: From Z to A complete series Blu-ray set is a comprehensive collection for fans. It includes all 30 episodes from the original two seasons (1990-91), the 1992 prequel film Fire Walk with Me, and the 18-episode 2017 Showtime revival. This amounts to 48 episodes of acclaimed television plus the feature film.

The set also boasts over 20 hours of special features, including 4K versions of the original series Pilot episode and Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series Episode 8. Notable special features include:

  • The Missing Pieces: 90 minutes of deleted/alternate scenes from Fire Walk with Me
  • Behind The Curtain: Making of Footage From Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series
  • Full-length versions of all Roadhouse Bar music performances
  • A Talk with Kyle MacLachlan and Sheryl Lee
  • On the Couch with Kimmy and Harry
  • 4K versions of the Original Series Pilot and Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series Episode 8
  • Additional special features from previous Twin Peaks home releases

It`s worth noting that the reissued From Z to A features a more standard plastic case compared to the original`s premium fold-out box and lacks collectible art prints, making it a more accessible, albeit less “collector`s item,” option.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (4K Blu-ray + 1080p Blu-ray)

The upcoming 4K Blu-ray edition of Fire Walk with Me from Criterion includes both 4K UHD and 1080p Blu-ray discs, with both featuring the film and special content. Key special features include:

  • Film and special features on both discs: 4K Blu-ray & 1080p Blu-ray
  • 4K digital restoration supervised by David Lynch
  • DTS TrueHD 7.1 Master Audio supervised by David Lynch
  • DTS 2.0 Master Audio
  • The Missing Pieces: 90 minutes of deleted scenes pieced together by David Lynch
  • Actor interviews: Sheryl Lee, Ray Wise, and Grace Zabriskie
  • Composer interview: Angelo Badalamenti
  • Trailers
  • English subtitles
  • Excerpts from 1997 book Lynch on Lynch

Criterion`s release also includes an exclusive booklet of essays. While some on-disc content mirrors that of the From Z to A set, this new Criterion release is the only way to view the film in native 4K.

Twin Peaks: The Television Collection (Blu-ray)

Released in 2019, Twin Peaks: The Television Collection (Blu-ray) was previously the primary option for owning the series in 1080p. This 16-disc set includes both the original 30-episode run and the 18-part Limited Event Series. While it lacks some special features found in From Z to A and does not include Fire Walk with Me, this omission is easily remedied by acquiring a separate Criterion Collection edition of the movie. Notably, The Television Collection is often praised for its superior box art and packaging compared to the reissued From Z to A`s plastic case.

Twin Peaks: The Television Collection (DVD)

Twin Peaks: The Television Collection is also available as a 17-disc DVD box set, mirroring the Blu-ray content. While some fans might prefer the nostalgic 480p resolution for the original seasons, especially on CRT televisions, it`s generally not recommended for viewing on modern displays due to potential picture quality issues.

Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series (Blu-ray)

The 18-episode Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series (also known as The Return or Season 3) was reissued on Blu-ray. This set includes all Showtime episodes, along with various featurettes, a behind-the-scenes photo gallery, and a video of the Twin Peaks Season 3 Comic-Con panel. If you already own From Z to A or The Television Collection, purchasing this stand-alone release is generally unnecessary, as the episodes are included in those comprehensive sets without offering unique packaging or higher resolution benefits.
