This Creepy Slasher Movie Inspired By An Iconic Disney Character Is Coming To 4K Blu-Ray

A predictable trend emerges when popular intellectual properties enter the public domain: they swiftly inspire horror adaptations. This phenomenon was first observed with Winnie the Pooh, and more recently, with Steamboat Willie. The 1928 Disney character, an early iteration of Mickey Mouse, became public domain on January 1, 2024. Soon after, he was re-envisioned as a villain in the animated horror-comedy short, Screamboat.

This film is slated for a Blu-ray release on December 9, including a premium 4K Blu-ray steelbook edition. The two-disc set comprises both 4K and standard Blu-ray copies. The Ultra HD version features native 4K resolution with HDR10 and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. The artwork is strikingly deceptive; the front portrays Steamboat Willie waving innocently, but a closer look reveals a backdrop of carnage. The back cover showcases a computer-generated rendition of Willie overlooking the New York City skyline.

Screamboat Bonus Material

While bonus features are limited, the Blu-ray will include deleted scenes, a brief behind-the-scenes documentary, and audio commentary from David Howard Thornton, who portrays Willie.

Screamboat was unveiled swiftly after Steamboat Willie entered the public domain. The plot follows a deranged version of the iconic mouse, embittered by years of neglect, as he pilots a New York ferry, subjecting passengers to his violent spree. Despite being largely considered a cynical cash-in, the film gains some notoriety through its ties to the Terrifier horror franchise. It was produced by the same team behind Terrifier 2 and 3, and stars David Howard Thornton, known for his role as Art the Clown, as Willie.

Released in April, the film received mixed reviews. However, for those seeking extreme violence, practical effects, and a straightforward, unpretentious horror experience featuring a murderous mouse, Screamboat could be a suitable choice.

This trend of reimagining public domain characters for horror isn`t unique to Steamboat Willie. The Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey films exemplify this, transforming Pooh and his friends into murderous entities. The 2023 film, considered the first in the `Twisted Childhood Universe,` reinterprets A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard`s classic tales as a horror parody where Pooh and Piglet embark on a violent rampage. Despite a modest budget of approximately $100,000, it achieved a global box office of $7.7 million. A sequel followed, with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, and Owl seeking retribution against Christopher Robin for exposing their existence.

The Terrifier franchise stands out as a contemporary success in the slasher genre, which has seen a decline in popularity since its peak in the 80s and 90s. Featuring Art the Clown, these films are renowned for their extreme gore, which intensifies with each installment. Art the Clown has quickly risen to icon status in modern horror cinema.
