The vast universe of The Witcher is set to expand with the announcement of a new board game, The Witcher: Legacy. After three years in development, this game is distinct from the highly anticipated The Witcher 4, but promises to intricately explore a monumental event in the franchise`s lore: the devastating Pogrom at Kaer Morhen.
Developed by Go On Board, The Witcher: Legacy serves as a direct sequel to the acclaimed The Witcher: Old World. Its primary focus is the cataclysmic destruction of the School of the Wolf, the venerable fortress where Geralt of Rivia, among others, was trained. This violent historical incident saw a furious mob storming Kaer Morhen, resulting in the massacre of nearly all its inhabitants and almost eradicating the last remaining Witcher school – a pivotal moment in the history of The Witcher books and games.
A strong narrative component is central to The Witcher: Legacy. Go On Board stated on its Gamefound page that it is working in close cooperation with CD Projekt Red, ensuring fidelity to both the game`s mechanics and its overarching story.
“The narratives presented in the script books will transport players to occurrences that have not yet been thoroughly explored within the existing games or literature,” Go On Board revealed. While the developers are keen to avoid major spoilers, they confirmed that the Pogrom itself forms the core thematic thread of the game.
Players will step into the shoes of the few survivors of Kaer Morhen. Their journey will be one of discovery and retribution, as they set out to identify those responsible for the Pogrom and “avenge your fallen comrades.” The gameplay is structured around a branching, scenario-driven narrative, where player decisions are paramount and possess the power to shape the very “history of the Continent.”
While The Witcher: Legacy might bear a superficial resemblance to The Witcher: Old World, Go On Board emphasizes that it offers a fundamentally different experience. Although full details on specific game mechanics are still under wraps, the creators highlighted that its campaign-based structure is designed for deep story immersion. Furthermore, numerous “legacy-style mechanics” are incorporated to underline the player`s influence, ensuring that choices truly carry weight.
As of now, a definitive release date for The Witcher: Legacy has not been announced, but Go On Board anticipates sharing more information in the upcoming months. Meanwhile, fans interested in the digital realm of The Witcher can look forward to the next installment of the RPG franchise. CD Projekt Red recently presented an Unreal Engine 5 tech demo for the upcoming The Witcher 4, signaling their intent to move away from mundane fetch quests and expressing hopes that players will “fully embrace” Ciri as a potential central protagonist.
