Battlefield 6 is set to reintroduce Operation Firestorm, a popular map from Battlefield 3. However, according to Battlefield Studios, the process of modernizing and remastering this map, and indeed other legacy maps, proved to be far from straightforward.
During an interview with PCGamesN, design director Shashank Uchil remarked on the unexpected complexity of this task, stating, “You wouldn`t believe how difficult it is,” implying the reasons were not what one might initially assume.
Uchil highlighted that a significant challenge in remastering maps stems from player expectations. With Battlefield 3 having launched 14 years ago in 2011, players often recall the original with a strong sense of nostalgia and specific memories.
He elaborated that while players are intimately familiar with these maps and hold particular expectations, their perceptions can sometimes be colored by “rose-tinted glasses,” leading to idealized recollections of “how it used to be.”
The distinct destruction mechanics and varied weapon arsenal present in Battlefield 6 further complicated the remastering of Operation Firestorm, making it “much more complicated than people think,” according to Uchil.
Meanwhile, producer Jeremy Chubb emphasized the delicate balance developers must strike when remastering maps, referring to it as navigating a “fine line.”
Chubb explained that players possess very specific visions of the original map and desire that experience to be faithfully recreated. However, he noted that failing to evolve the map and integrate Battlefield 6`s new ideas and features would likely disappoint players.
Upon its launch, Battlefield 6 will feature nine multiplayer maps, among which Operation Firestorm is confirmed. Although unconfirmed, data mining efforts suggest the potential inclusion of at least three additional remastered maps: Propaganda from Battlefield 4, Talah Market from Battlefield 3, and Downtown from Battlefield Hardline. Publisher EA has indicated plans to introduce more maps to Battlefield 6 post-launch, following a seasonal DLC model.
Battlefield 6 is scheduled for release on October 10th across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms. Additionally, a battle royale game mode is currently under development.
