The Last of Us: HBO Executive Discusses Future Seasons and Neil Druckmann’s Departure

The highly acclaimed HBO series, “The Last of Us,” recently experienced a significant change with Neil Druckmann stepping back from his roles as a director and co-showrunner. Despite this, a senior HBO executive expresses no concern regarding his exit from the wildly popular show. In a recent interview, Casey Bloys, HBO`s content chairman, addressed Druckmann`s departure and provided an anticipated release window of 2027 for Season 3.

Speaking to Variety, Bloys acknowledged that Druckmann`s initial involvement was invaluable, as he helped lay the “blueprint” for the TV adaptation`s creative direction. Bloys expressed strong confidence in the show`s continued success, largely attributing it to the consistent involvement of the other key showrunner, Craig Mazin, who remains actively engaged.

“I believe we`ll be in excellent shape. I`m not worried at all,” Bloys affirmed, reassuring fans about the series` trajectory.

Bloys further explained that Druckmann had been diligently balancing his commitments to “The Last of Us” TV series with his significant full-time responsibilities at Naughty Dog, the renowned video game studio he co-presides over.

“He holds a very substantial position. So I fully understand his need to prioritize those demanding responsibilities,” Bloys stated, highlighting the extensive nature of Druckmann`s primary role.

Earlier this month, Druckmann publicly announced his decision to step away from his active roles on the TV series. He cited his intention to concentrate on writing and directing Naughty Dog`s upcoming flagship game, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.” As Studio Head and Head of Creative at Naughty Dog, Druckmann is now dedicating more focused time to these core video game development roles.

Season 3 Scheduled for 2027 Release

During the same interview, Bloys unequivocally confirmed that “The Last of Us” Season 3 is “definitely planned for 2027.” He also clarified that Craig Mazin is still deliberating on the most effective way to conclude the entire narrative arc of “The Last of Us.”

“Craig is still working out whether it will be two more seasons or one more extended season. A final decision hasn`t been made, and I am deferring to Craig`s judgment on that matter,” Bloys noted, indicating flexibility in the show`s pacing.

Previously, Mazin had suggested that a fourth season would be essential to provide a proper and satisfying resolution to the intricate story. “There`s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we`ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth,” Mazin had previously stated.

Lastly, Bloys addressed potential marketing challenges arising from the death of Pedro Pascal`s character, Joel, and the anticipated narrative shift towards Kaitlyn Dever`s Abby instead of Bella Ramsey`s Ellie in upcoming episodes. Bloys believes this transition will not pose a significant problem for audience reception or promotion.

“The series title undoubtedly benefits from the video game`s strong legacy, and the first two seasons have already established a powerful brand recognition. I personally appreciate shows that are willing to explore and present narratives from different viewpoints,” he commented, embracing the evolution of the story.

“The Last of Us” recently garnered an impressive 16 Emmy nominations, including a prestigious nod for Best Drama, underscoring its critical acclaim. With the first season having received 24 nominations, the show`s total Emmy nominations across its initial two seasons now amount to a remarkable 40, solidifying its standing as a major television success.
