The recent trailer for Subnautica 2 has sparked controversy. Fans are concerned about the removal of Unknown Worlds` leadership and reports that a delay could cost the team a $250 million bonus. This situation has prompted calls for a boycott, to which publisher Krafton responded by stating the leadership change was necessary due to “project abandonment.”
According to a Bloomberg report, Unknown Worlds employees were promised a portion of a $250 million bonus tied to meeting 2025 financial targets, potentially relying on an early-access release for Subnautica 2 this year. A viral Reddit post suggested the delay is a tactic by Krafton to avoid paying the bonus, urging fans not to support the game.
The controversial Reddit post, which gained over 45,000 upvotes, was later locked and removed by moderators.
Charlie Cleveland, one of the founders recently removed from leadership, claims Subnautica 2 was ready for early access, but Krafton decided on a 2026 release for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
After an initial vague statement, Krafton issued a more detailed and strongly-worded response to justify the leadership changes and address the bonus situation.
Krafton highlighted its $500 million acquisition of Unknown Worlds, stating that 90% of the $250 million potential bonus was allocated to three former executives who, according to the publisher, “abandoned their responsibilities.”
The publisher claimed Subnautica 2 was originally set for early access in early 2024 but faced significant delays. Krafton stated they asked Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire to return as Game Director and Technical Director, but both refused. Specifically, after the game Moonbreaker failed, Krafton reportedly asked Cleveland to focus on Subnautica 2 development, but he chose to work on a personal film instead.
Krafton attributed the project`s directional confusion and substantial delays to the lack of core leadership, adding that the current early-access build lacks sufficient content.
Krafton expressed deep disappointment and a sense of betrayal regarding the former leadership`s actions and their perceived failure to uphold the trust of the fans.
Addressing the bonuses, Krafton stated they recognize the current team`s dedication and effort and reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the promised rewards.
The specifics of this commitment remain vague. A spokesperson for Krafton only stated that the company is working on “fair and equitable compensation” for the development team and will provide more details later.
