Steven Spielberg’s “Minority Report” Arrives on 4K Blu-Ray

Steven Spielberg`s captivating 2002 dark sci-fi thriller, “Minority Report,” is set to receive a stunning 4K Blu-ray release. Scheduled for December 9, this highly anticipated restoration will allow fans of Spielberg, star Tom Cruise, and author Philip K. Dick to experience the futuristic classic with enhanced visual fidelity. Two distinct editions will be available: a Limited Edition Steelbook and a standard 4K Blu-ray.

Interest in the film`s 4K release is already high, with the Steelbook Edition quickly becoming a popular choice. Another acclaimed Spielberg film, “Catch Me If You Can,” is also receiving a 4K Blu-ray release on the same date.

The Limited Edition Steelbook boasts distinctive packaging. Its front cover mirrors the 2010 standard Blu-ray release, while the back features the iconic Precrime department emblem. Inside, fans will find a screenshot of Tom Cruise`s character, Anderton, interacting with his gesture-controlled computer. This two-disc collection includes the film on a 4K Blu-ray disc, a separate Blu-ray disc for special features, and a voucher for a digital copy.

The 4K transfer of “Minority Report” supports advanced visual technologies like Dolby Vision and HDR10, promising a stunning picture. Audio is also upgraded with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track for an immersive sound experience. All bonus features from the prior Blu-ray release are carried over, offering insights into Spielberg`s vision of the future, behind-the-scenes glimpses of props, pre-visualization, storyboards, and much more.

The standard 4K Blu-ray edition offers the same comprehensive content as the Steelbook, differing only in its cover art, which features a classic “Minority Report” theatrical poster. It also includes the same special features disc and a digital streaming code.

Set in 2054, “Minority Report” plunges viewers into a future where Washington D.C.`s “Precrime” unit prevents murders before they happen, thanks to the visions of three precognitive individuals. The story follows detective John Anderton, a dedicated Precrime officer who suddenly finds himself accused of a future murder he has yet to commit. On the run, Anderton races against time to expose the truth behind his predicted crime and identify his alleged victim.

The film, released in 2002, is an adaptation of Philip K. Dick`s 1956 novelette of the same title. It was a commercial success, grossing an impressive $358 million worldwide. A television series, serving as a sequel to the film, aired in 2015 but was canceled after just ten episodes.

Philip K. Dick`s original novelette, “The Minority Report,” can be found in various collected editions of his classic science fiction works. It is notably included in “The Philip K. Dick Reader,” which features other stories adapted into films like “Total Recall” and “Paycheck.” For those preferring a hardcover format, “Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick” is also available.

It`s worth noting that the film adaptation introduces significant deviations from Dick`s original novelette. These changes were often made to modernize the story`s technology, evolving from punch cards to more contemporary visions of futuristic tech, and to expand the narrative for a feature-length cinematic experience.

For those eager to delve deeper into Philip K. Dick`s extensive bibliography, the Library of America offers a comprehensive three-volume hardcover box set. This expansive collection spans over 2,900 pages and contains 13 classic novels, including “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, the foundational text for Ridley Scott`s iconic film “Blade Runner.” However, it`s important to note that this particular box set focuses solely on Dick`s novels and does not include the novelette “The Minority Report.”
