Valve has declared its intention to cease Steam support for Windows 10 32-bit systems, effective early next year. Users still relying on this older architecture are strongly advised to upgrade to a 64-bit version of Windows 10 promptly.
According to a recent announcement on Steam`s support page, official support for Windows 10 32-bit systems will conclude starting January 1, 2026. While existing 32-bit games and currently installed Steam clients might continue to function for a limited period, they will no longer receive critical updates, including security patches or technical assistance, beyond this date.
This transition is anticipated to affect a minimal segment of the user base, as Valve`s collected data indicates that only 0.01% of systems surveyed utilize Windows 10 32-bit. Although Steam currently operates as a 32-bit application across all Windows platforms, future versions are slated to run exclusively on 64-bit Windows environments.
Valve emphasizes the importance of updating operating systems sooner rather than later, as core features within Steam may not be fully supported on 32-bit versions of Windows.
This decision by Steam aligns with Microsoft`s own discontinuation of support for Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8.1 and 7), scheduled for October 14. These older OS versions will remain operational, but they will cease to receive updates or technical support, thereby significantly increasing their vulnerability to cybersecurity threats.
