Starfield Makes PlayStation 5 Debut with Major DLC and Updates This April

Bethesda’s highly anticipated space RPG, Starfield, is finally launching on PlayStation 5, accompanied by significant new downloadable content (DLC) available across all platforms.

On April 7th, Starfield will debut on PlayStation 5. This launch coincides with two major updates releasing simultaneously for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation: the ‘Terran Armada’ story DLC and the ‘Free Lanes’ update. These new additions are described as more extensive than the ‘Shattered Space’ DLC released in 2024.

Initially released in 2023 as a flagship Xbox exclusive, Starfield marked a significant departure for Bethesda. Renowned for its expansive open-world RPGs often set in established universes, the studio ventured into its first entirely new universe in decades with Starfield. Players navigate the sprawling Settled Systems, exploring countless planets, constructing spacecraft, assembling crews, and forging their unique destinies amidst diverse factions, intriguing mysteries, and numerous side quests.

Since its initial debut, Starfield has continuously evolved. Bethesda has introduced new gameplay systems, refined existing mechanics, and implemented various quality-of-life improvements based on player feedback. A story expansion followed shortly after launch, and the ‘Creations’ system has enabled a vibrant community of modders, offering over a thousand player-made additions to customize or enhance the game.

The April 7th update is poised to be the most substantial transformation for Starfield to date. Bethesda touts it as the definitive version of the game since its launch, offering newcomers an improved entry experience and providing returning players ample incentives to explore the Settled Systems once more.

The PlayStation 5 rendition of Starfield transcends a simple port. It has been specifically optimized to leverage Sony’s hardware capabilities, incorporating the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers, lightbar functionality, and touchpad integration. These enhancements are designed to provide richer tactile feedback during space travel, combat, and exploration.

For those with the PlayStation 5 Pro, additional display options will be available. Bethesda is introducing a ‘Pro Performance Mode’ for elevated frame rates and a ‘Pro Visual Mode’ that prioritizes graphical fidelity, catering to players seeking the most detailed visual experience.

To make the game more accessible, Bethesda is reducing the price of Starfield’s base edition to $49.99 across all platforms. Given the extensive content added since its release, this offers an attractive entry point for new players.

Existing players will find the new content accompanying the PlayStation launch particularly compelling.

The highlight is the new ‘Terran Armada’ story DLC, which introduces a fresh storyline spanning the Settled Systems. This narrative centers on a robotic menace, the Terran Armada, bringing new NPCs, enemies, and uncharted locations. Bethesda indicates that player choices and exploration will significantly impact the unfolding story, allowing players to shape the future of human presence in space, consistent with the studio’s RPG traditions.

In conjunction with the DLC, the ‘Free Lanes’ update brings several gameplay enhancements aimed at streamlining exploration. A key improvement is star system travel: players can now utilize a new cruise mode to journey between planets, offering a more engaging experience than sole reliance on menus and fast travel. These interplanetary cruises may reveal dynamic activities, events, and unexpected discoveries.

This update also diversifies discoverable locations by adding new encounters, points of interest, and dungeon-like areas, enriching planetary exploration.

Furthermore, a new upgrade resource, X-Tech, will be introduced. This material allows players to enhance weapons, ship modules, and other equipment, deepening the progression system for those who enjoy customizing their gear and optimizing their builds.

Combat mechanics will also see refinements. Bethesda is implementing enemy modifiers to introduce new difficulty tiers, with foes potentially featuring stronger shields, increased attack frequency, or elemental damage types, demanding more adaptable combat strategies. Planetary exploration receives a boost with the ‘Moon Jumper,’ a new land vehicle designed to facilitate more efficient traversal across varied terrains, enhancing the smoothness of large-area exploration.

Outpost building is also being enhanced with the introduction of cross-outpost storage for easier resource management across multiple bases. A ‘Milliewhale’ pet will add personality to outpost life, and new crew members, including Muria and a mini-bot companion, can now be recruited to join players on their interstellar voyages.

A significant change for New Game Plus players is the ‘Starborn’ system, which will now permit carrying a limited selection of items through the Unity when initiating a new cycle. This subtle yet impactful adjustment provides returning players with a stronger incentive for subsequent playthroughs.

Owners of the ‘Trackers Alliance’ DLC will receive five new bounty hunts at no additional cost, expanding available targets, contracts, and rewards. Collectively, these updates signify substantial progress for Starfield, demonstrating Bethesda’s ongoing commitment to evolving the game since its initial launch.

From a personal perspective, my initial experience with Starfield on Xbox was highly enjoyable, offering countless hours of planetary exploration, ship customization, and discovery of intriguing side stories. The upcoming PlayStation release is particularly exciting for me, as it aligns with my current primary gaming platform. With its enhanced quality-of-life features, novel exploration mechanics, and a complete story expansion, April 7th appears to be an ideal moment for both new recruits and veteran explorers to once again embark on a journey through the Settled Systems.
