In the 1990s, Todd McFarlane`s Spawn comic book was a major phenomenon, serving as Image Comics` flagship title. Its popularity extended into mainstream culture through toys, an animated HBO series, and most notably, a 1997 feature film starring Michael Jai White as the antihero. Now, nearly two decades after its original release, this dark superhero movie is receiving a limited-edition 4K restoration from Arrow Video, a company known for its high-quality cult classic upgrades.
The Spawn Limited Edition set features both the theatrical and director`s cuts, presented with premium packaging, new artwork, and exclusive collectibles. Initially priced at $50 for preorders, Amazon has introduced a significant discount, bringing the cost down to $38 (was $50). This 4K Limited Edition is set to launch on October 7.
Arrow Video undertook a native 4K (2160p) restoration of both the theatrical and director`s cuts, utilizing the original camera negatives. Both versions boast High Dynamic Range support with Dolby Vision and HDR10, alongside audio options including DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and lossless stereo. The Limited Edition comes in a reversible sleeve featuring new artwork, an illustrated booklet with fresh commentary, and a double-sided, fold-out poster. A key distinction between the two cuts lies in their tone: the theatrical version had significant violence removed to achieve a PG-13 rating. While the Director`s Cut is only slightly longer (less than three minutes), its inclusion of additional violence pushes it into R-rated territory. The set is also packed with bonus materials, such as a new audio commentary by comic book expert and podcast host Dave Baxter, and recent interviews with the film`s cast and crew. Furthermore, it includes a wealth of archival content like behind-the-scenes featurettes, promotional materials, and previous audio commentaries from earlier DVD and Blu-ray releases. A comprehensive list of features is provided below.

The film Spawn follows the narrative of Al Simmons, a highly effective black ops soldier. After being betrayed and killed by his commanding officer, Jason Wynn (portrayed by Martin Sheen), Simmons is condemned to hell for his past actions. However, he is brought back to Earth by the demon Malebolgia, who seeks to initiate the apocalypse. Imbued with hellish powers, Simmons grapples with his desire for vengeance, the influence of dark forces, and his path toward redemption.
Although it might not hold the same groundbreaking status as Blade – released a year later and widely acknowledged for modernizing the superhero genre – Spawn still offers plenty to appreciate. The film boldly embraces its comic book origins, combining impressive practical effects with cutting-edge CGI for its era to vividly realize the character. Michael Jai White delivers a compelling performance as the tormented antihero, complemented by John Leguizamo`s memorable portrayal of Clown, who transforms into the formidable Violator when cornered.
For an excellent superhero movie night, pairing Spawn with Blade would make a fantastic double feature. Blade is already accessible on 4K Blu-ray. Alternatively, the Blade Trilogy is available on 1080p Blu-ray.
