The critically acclaimed horror film, `Late Night with the Devil,` recently unveiled a new limited-edition 4K Blu-ray Steelbook. Launched on August 5th, this special edition is currently listed as `temporarily out of stock,` but orders can still be placed for $40. Given the rapid sell-out of the original Steelbook release last September, it`s anticipated that this new version will also be a highly sought-after collectible.
Despite its modest independent budget and initial release on Shudder and in limited theaters, `Late Night with the Devil` achieved significant critical acclaim. Last year, it emerged as the highest-rated horror movie on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting an impressive 97% `Fresh` rating derived from hundreds of critic reviews.
The 2025 Steelbook`s artwork is inspired directly by the film. The front cover features talk show host Jack Delroy, while the back displays a chilling quote from the movie: “Ladies and gentleman, please stay tuned for a live television first… As we attempt to commune with the Devil.” The interior of the case showcases images of Jack, Lily (the possessed 13-year-old), and June Ross-Mitchell, Lily`s parapsychologist and adoptive mother.
Although the Amazon listing for the 2025 edition doesn`t display images of bundled collectibles, the product description indicates their inclusion. These physical extras, present in the 2024 edition and likely in the 2025 one, consist of an autographed photo of Jack Delroy (the main character), an exclusive bookmark, and a `Night Owl`s` logo air freshener.
The Steelbook also includes a range of special features, such as an audio commentary track by lead actor David Dastmalchian, a Q&A session with directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes, and various behind-the-scenes featurettes.
`Late Night with the Devil` is also accessible as a standard Blu-ray. While two Blu-ray versions are listed on Amazon, a $15.39 edition released in May and a $23 edition from last October, they appear identical. Therefore, opting for the more affordable May release seems more practical.
The narrative of `Late Night with the Devil` centers on `Night Owls,` a late-night talk show experiencing a sharp decline in ratings after the host`s wife passes away. Jack Delroy, portrayed by David Dastmalchian, tries to revive viewership by broadcasting a Halloween special featuring a 13-year-old girl believed to be demonically possessed. However, the event takes an unexpected turn, and the live broadcast rapidly descends into chaos, slipping entirely out of Jack`s control.
This film is an unsettling and expertly crafted piece, showcasing outstanding performances from its lead actors, including Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon (as June), and Ingrid Torelli (as Lily). Its theatrical debut was remarkably successful, grossing $2.8 million in its opening days, marking the most lucrative opening weekend for an IFC Films release. Intriguingly, this sum included $666,666 on Sunday, a figure that is both thematically fitting, coincidentally amusing, and somewhat unsettling.
