Sucker Punch, the acclaimed developer behind Ghost of Tsushima and its forthcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei, has consistently credited samurai cinema as a major inspiration. In anticipation of Ghost of Yotei`s release this autumn, Sucker Punch is collaborating with Alamo Drafthouse to host exclusive screenings of select samurai films that profoundly influenced the game`s design.
The announcement, made via Sucker Punch`s social media platforms, detailed a series of five iconic films chosen for these special events. These include:
- The Tale of Zatoichi by director Kenji Misumi
- Takashi Miike`s remake of 13 Assassins
- Lady Snowblood by director Toshiya Fujita
- Akira Kurosawa`s masterpiece Ran
- Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance by director Kenji Misumi
These screenings are scheduled to take place at specific Alamo Drafthouse cinemas from August 2nd to September 4th.
For Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch previously collaborated with Akira Kurosawa`s estate to implement a distinctive black-and-white `Kurosawa mode`. This beloved visual style will return in Ghost of Yotei. Furthermore, the sequel will introduce a new mode co-created with Takashi Miike, focusing on intense, close-quarters combat animations. Shinichirō Watanabe, known for directing Samurai Champloo, has also contributed to the game, adding original lo-fi music tracks to Ghost of Yotei`s soundtrack.
Earlier this month, Sucker Punch disclosed a significant detail about Ghost of Yotei`s protagonist, Atsu: she will not be confined to traditional samurai or shinobi weaponry. Instead, Atsu will command a diverse arsenal, capable of wielding various weapons at her discretion.
Sony has also confirmed the release of two limited-edition PlayStation 5 bundles themed around Ghost of Yotei, set to launch concurrently with the game on October 2nd.
