Roblox Safety: A Parent’s Essential Guide

While digital games captivate audiences of all ages, platforms like Roblox, with its vast young user base, frequently spark parental concerns regarding child safety. This guide aims to address these crucial questions by detailing Roblox`s privacy features, parental control options, content maturity ratings, and reporting mechanisms for issues like cyberbullying, Robux scams, or criminal activities. We will also examine a notable Bloomberg report on predators leveraging the platform and the company`s subsequent responses.

Is Roblox Safe for Your Child to Play?

Roblox has significantly enhanced its safety measures in recent years, introducing improved parental controls, restricting direct messaging and social “hangout” experiences for users under 13, and empowering its moderation team to combat illicit activities. The company is also investing in AI for better child protection and provides a dedicated safety section for parents on its website.

Despite these efforts, persistent child safety concerns remain, with authorities receiving thousands of reports of grooming activities originating from its games. While in-game chat bullying is strictly moderated, safeguards against Robux scams, especially those within specific experiences, are less robust.

Ultimately, compared to highly restricted online games where interactions are limited to predefined phrases or emotes, Roblox offers a more open environment. Parents must weigh the risks of potential interactions with strangers, scams, or bullying. A recommended approach is for parents to personally explore certain experiences before allowing their children to play, noting any potential issues, and then discussing these findings with their child. Given the challenges of continuous supervision, some parents might find it simpler to restrict access entirely.

How to Set Up Roblox Parental Controls

To establish parental controls on Roblox, first ensure you have your account set up. Then, follow these steps:

  • Log into your child’s Roblox account via PC or mobile. Age verification, typically requiring a government-issued ID or credit card, is necessary.
  • Access the Settings menu: click the cog icon in the top right on PC, or tap “More” then the gear icon on mobile.
  • Select “Parental Controls” and then “Add Parent.”
  • Enter your email address to link your account.

From the Parental Controls section, you can customize your child`s experience, including:

Content Maturity: Filter experiences based on age-appropriateness. This rating applies to game content, not user interactions. Categories include:

  • Minimal – These experiences are the lowest rating and may contain occasional mild violence, occasional mild fear, and/or light, unrealistic blood.
  • Mild – May contain repeated mild violence, mild crude humor, mild repeated fear, and/or heavy, unrealistic blood.
  • Moderate – May contain moderate violence, moderate crude humor, moderate repeated fear, light realistic blood, and what Roblox describes as “unplayable gambling content” (meaning no real-world exchange for gambling content).
  • Restricted – The highest rating. Experiences here contain strong violence, heavy realistic blood, moderate crude humor, romantic themes, moderate fear, strong language, and depictions of alcohol. This rating also includes unplayable gambling content and is only available to users verified as 17+.

You can also block specific experiences, manage screen time, toggle chat functionality, control private server access and connections, and set spending limits for Robux or subscriptions.

Bloomberg Report on Child Safety in Roblox

A 2024 Bloomberg report unveiled a significant issue of pedophile activity on Roblox. It highlighted a case where a developer used his game to groom young fans, eventually leading to his arrest in 2022 and a 15-year prison sentence for sex trafficking a minor. The report underscored that this was not an isolated incident, citing at least two dozen arrests in the US since 2018 for abduction or abuse linked to victims met or groomed via Roblox.

It explained how predators often exploit the platform`s currency, Robux, to entice children onto external platforms like Snapchat or Discord for illicit activities, or even to arrange in-person meetings.

Despite Roblox`s daily active user base exceeding 78 million, its team of 3,000 moderators processes over 50,000 chat messages daily. While Roblox asserts that its smaller team (compared to TikTok`s 40,000 moderators) maintains moderation quality, current and former employees have described policing the platform as a “Sisyphean task.” The report also noted that the term “grooming” was absent from Roblox Corp`s 2022 moderation guide and that senior leadership reportedly did not adequately investigate the misuse of Robux for predatory purposes.

In subsequent years, Roblox has invested in tools to detect and remove users who harass individuals off-platform or offline, and to identify new accounts created by previously banned users. The Bloomberg report mentioned that Roblox Corp. reported 13,316 instances of child exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2023, a significant increase from 2,973 in the previous year.

The Official Roblox Response to Parents

In a March 2025 BBC News article, Roblox CEO and co-founder David Baszucki stated that if parents are uncomfortable, they should not allow their children to play on Roblox, emphasizing parental discretion. This comment drew criticism from parent groups, including Mumsnet, which argued that responsibility should not solely rest on parents, particularly given the challenges of constant supervision even with parental controls enabled.

More recently, Baszucki has supported updated online privacy protection legislation for children and teens. He highlighted Roblox`s use of AI for age estimation and a “Trusted Connections” feature for teenagers, allowing them to connect only with known individuals. Additionally, accounts for users under 13 are now prevented from sending direct messages or accessing experiences designed solely for social hangouts.
