Roblox is set to roll out a comprehensive age verification system for all players who wish to utilize in-game voice chat. This robust verification process will integrate facial age estimation technology, official identification document verification, and confirmed parental consent to ensure a high level of accuracy.
The details of these forthcoming changes were officially communicated by Matt Kaufman, Roblox`s Chief Safety Officer, in a statement published on the company`s website. Kaufman emphasized that these new methods are designed to provide a significantly more precise age assessment compared to self-declared user input alone.
Upon the full deployment of this new system, Roblox has committed to introducing even more safety tools aimed at preventing children from interacting with adults they do not personally know offline. The announcement highlighted that Roblox has already launched over 100 safety enhancements to its platform since January 2025, including an innovative open-source AI system named `Roblox Sentinel,` specifically developed to detect early indicators of potential child endangerment.
However, the company`s announcement did not offer a more precise timetable for the implementation of these changes, nor did it address potential privacy concerns that players might have regarding the new verification methods.
Roblox expressed its aspiration that this proactive move will set a new industry standard that other gaming, social media, and communication platforms will be inspired to adopt.
Significantly, this strategic update will also ensure Roblox`s compliance with the United Kingdom`s Online Safety Act, a pivotal piece of legislation that was officially enacted in early August.
These crucial changes come in the wake of heightened legislative scrutiny faced by Roblox. A 2024 report from Bloomberg reportedly uncovered issues related to pedophilia on the platform, prompting Congressman Ro Khanna to publicly support a petition in August demanding that Roblox enhance its efforts to combat child abuse.
Adding to the controversy, in March, Roblox CEO and co-founder David Baszucki responded to the allegations with a statement that drew considerable criticism from parents: “My first message would be, if you’re not comfortable, don’t let your kids be on Roblox.”
