Since Resident Evil 7, the core entries in the acclaimed horror franchise have primarily utilized a first-person perspective, diverging from the third-person view that became standard after Resident Evil 4. While Resident Evil Village was initially developed with a first-person focus, a third-person camera option was later introduced after its release.
However, the upcoming title, Resident Evil Requiem, set to launch next year, will offer both first-person and third-person camera modes from day one. The game`s director stated that the inclusion of the third-person option is specifically to mitigate the intensity for players who might find the first-person perspective overly frightening.
In an interview with GamesRadar, director Koshi Nakanishi elaborated on his approach to Resident Evil 7`s first-person viewpoint, which was designed to enhance immersion and terror. He acknowledged a widespread consensus among critics and players that, while incredibly scary, the game might have been *too* terrifying for some.
Nakanishi further explained that this heightened level of fear likely prevented some players from completing or even initiating the game. Therefore, for Requiem, he prioritized accessibility, aiming to allow a broader audience to experience the title. He explained, “If you started the game in first-person and found it overwhelming, the third-person mode serves as a way to slightly distance yourself from that intense horror, making it more manageable by viewing your character as an on-screen avatar.”
Given Nakanishi`s previous comments hinting that Requiem could be the `most extreme` installment yet, the availability of a third-person option is expected to be a welcome feature for many players.
Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.
