An Original Story Rooted in the Resident Evil Universe
Director Zach Cregger, acclaimed for his work on Barbarian and Weapons, had previously indicated that his upcoming Resident Evil movie would present a “weird story” that intentionally avoids using established game protagonists like Leon Kennedy. However, Cregger now wants to reassure fans that, despite its original narrative, the film will be firmly embedded within the same universe as Capcom`s renowned survival-horror game series.
In a discussion with Entertainment Weekly, Cregger emphasized the film`s “entirely original story,” remarking, “When you watch it, you`ll be like, `This is very Zach.`” Nevertheless, he affirmed its placement “in the Resident Evil world” and expressed confidence that “fans of the games aren`t going to be disappointed.” Cregger conveyed his deep respect for the source material, stating his intention “to tell a Resident Evil story within the Resident Evil canon that still leaves everything they love intact from the games, you know what I mean?”
Casting Developments and Production Schedule
Cregger also confirmed that Austin Abrams, an actor from Weapons, has been cast in a leading role for the Resident Evil movie. While specific details about Abrams` character were not disclosed, the director praised Abrams, noting he is “so right for the role in Resident Evil.”
Abrams is expected to be joined by seasoned actor Paul Walter Hauser, who reportedly finalized his involvement earlier this week. Production for the Resident Evil movie is scheduled to commence this October in Prague, with further casting announcements anticipated soon. The film is slated for a theatrical release on September 18, 2026.
Capcom`s Milestone Anniversary and Future Plans
Coinciding with the film`s development, next year marks the 30th anniversary of the original Resident Evil game. Capcom plans to celebrate this significant milestone by launching Resident Evil 9: Requiem in February 2026, alongside new ports of Resident Evil titles for the Nintendo Switch 2.
